IN THE face of a tidal wave of unemployment and choking economic recession in 1981, Conservative Cabinet Minister Norman Tebbit sparked outrage by suggesting that jobless people should "get on their bikes" and look for work. It was a defining political moment, which nearly three decades later is to be put to the test by one of the most well-known faces in TV news. From today, Sky News presenter, ...

ARSONISTS have been blamed for a fire which swept through two acres of heathland near Teignmouth. Firefighters spent an hour and a half in strong winds battling the fire which is believed to have been ignited by fireworks. One fire appliance from Teignmouth and the 4x4 vehicle from Dawlish were called to Little Haldon after a passing motorist saw plumes of smoke and flames leaping into the air.
Hi. I always thought that the brickwork that I believe you're referring to is part of the sea defences and that the bricks were laid to to shore up Langstone Rock. Many years ago, one used to be able to swim through a tunnel underneath the Rock, however that tunnel has long since been bricked up.
The Dream boys tonight at Dawlish Sands, what charity is it in aid of? Thanks
It's a pity that more people don't use the Sandy Lane par 3 course. Surely the District Council should be asking why that is so, rather than making what seems to me to be a very hasty decision to close it. Those tight-arse locals who abuse the facilty by using the course without paying, should be really happy with themselves. At least the District Council have said that the site won't be used for ...
I feel sad that you are unable to move to another town.

The campaign Task Force is very much at an embryonic stage and the small collective (presently there are 5 of us) that have decided to take on this challenge are busy forming an appropriate and achievable strategy. We are hoping that, with ...
Tests revealed a high presence of bacteria in water flowing from a waterfowl compound in Dawlish into the sea. A single member of the public complained that the town council did not have a proper disposal system to deal with water flowing from the pond in the waterfowl enclosure. But the resort could also now be deprived of its 14 black swans, which are kept on a brook adjacent to the pond, after ...

South West Trains from London Waterloo will terminate at Exeter from December 2009. This will allow an hourly service from Exeter - Salisbury - Waterloo, I thought that may be the plan. I don't think there has ever been an hourly timetable on the line.

I have just taken my dog for a walk and the strong smell of smoke led me to Weech Road. I was saddened to see Stonelands House well ablaze. When speaking to one of the fireman he told me there were 12 Fire Engines and 2 Hydraulics in attendance.
My sources tell me that Fortnum and Mason will be taking over the premises.

The stores in Exeter's Guildhall Shopping Centre and Dawlish will close on Friday and the Exmouth store will be among the final batch to close on Monday. The closures mark the end of an era for British retailing, with Woolworths having been trading on the High Street for 99 years. Some 27,000 employees nationwide are facing unemployment as the 807 stores are closed.
