Well done to all concerned for the TWO Blue Flag Awards that have come our way this year. Dawlish Warren has been awarded it's Blue Flag for the 12th year in a row - what a fantastic achievement by the people responsible for ensuring that we have one of the top beach resorts in the whole of the UK! Coryton Cove has also earned a much coveted Blue Flag Award, and fully deserved it is as well!
Really I am amazed, the warren beach is a unkempt mess, I think the technical term is "nature reserve" which stands for letting it go to rack and ruin. The beach is full of stones and rocks which makes barefoot walking unstable, the sand is never raked and full of rubbish, rusted pop tins that have split open and broken glass. Did the people that give these awards out actually visit Devon, Never mind Dawlish.
I agree with you.(second time in two days. I must be in decline) Nowhere do the criteria for Blue Flag status mention raking a beach for stones and rocks which I think would be ludicrous. Clearly, litter should be removed but there will always be occasions when it has been washed up or not yet cleared. Although the nature reserve is the place I most like to visit, I do think the beach is pretty good, improving as you go further along. Blue Flag Criteria Why don't forum users make their own judgement?
@mark. i believe that it is more down to water quality. lots of beaches have stones, so why should that come into it? also, living in leeds, i dont suppose for one minute you get flotsam on the streets there.
The beach furthur up is fantastic , not a stone in sight. Only the lazy gits stay on the stony bit of beach. i also have to add that the beach past red rock is looking excellent at the moment as is dawlish town beach.
