Forget that now seen where to donate. Here's hoping today's good weather is the long over due turning point and the beautiful coast will soon be back to former glory
Theres also a lane closed on the A38 due to a fallentree
Wonder if Will's 'The Tempest' has got any appropriate quotes?
PRIME Minister David Cameron has said the Government is committed to reopening the Dawlish line – rather than opening an alternative route that avoids the coast. The Herald and Western Morning News have been heading a GW2 campaign – calling for an alternative link to London that isn’t subject to sea storms off Dawlish – and the campaign has won widespread backing. Network Rail is said to favour a ...

The first payments to affected residents are being issued today. Thanks to the people of Dawlish who have given fantastic support to the fundraising efforts of recent days.
Sorry- I didn't realise, thank you :-)
Thank you, that's really encouraging. Please be assured however that a whole host of people are working hard to make things better (Or at least as good as it can be given the situation locally and nationally), It's a team effort
As Micheal said, I was merely clarifying the situation and answering a query from carer. Having reviewed what I wrote I don't understand where the ambiguity comes.
Somerset levels get flooded weeks ago, oh that's a shame. Dawlish loses it's railway line, people are evacuated. Oh dear, never mind. The Thames, bursts it banks, houses flooded. All hands to the wheel, we'd better do something.
Mines working okay now, thanks to the powers that be.
BBC news article suggesting Network Rail has a preferred alternative route to the Dawlish one. However, abandoning the Dawlish route was "not an option". http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-26110559
Under mine there is no option..nothing there, all the othere have the agree etc. Posts within the last two or three days they can be removed ..here anyway.
If you are a Sainsburys pay as you go mobile customer top up £10 in store and get 11p off every litre of fuel.
Engineers have been working on a six-hours on, six-hours off basis around the tidal patterns to protect the most damaged section of sea wall in the coastal town of Dawlish, Devon. Full assessment of repairs will carried out this week, along with a revised timescale. Until then. the initial assessment of at least six weeks to completion still holds. Source: ...

A topical, if somewhat poignant, concession still available for those aged 60+ is the Senior Citizens Railcard. £30 a year for the card gets a third off Standard and First Class Anytime, Off-Peak and Advance fares throughout GB. Anyone know of any other travel concessions for the aged 60 and above? Air Travel? Coach Travel? Holidays?
If the existing line becomes a branch line - that doesn't reduce the costs of maintenance. They still have to repair it in the event of more sea damage. (and maintaining the cliffs at places like Shell Cove - on the landside, the red cliffs are weakening and prone to landslide) It's binary - either keep it, and invest in making it as impregnable as 21st century engineering allows - or walk ...
@leatash - you forgot to mention the birds very important aspect, if you work for the environment agency that is
I've read it Ken. It's an excuse for the Tories to try to divert attention from their slashing of the EA budget by £75 million each and every year. Factually, the wildlife survey is for the Warren element of the wider project. Any building work would not have started yet anyway - wildlife survey or not!
Thank you, Michael. I'm sure this will be of help to anyone in this situation. I'm just astounded to think that someone at the council didn't have the wit to relax the red tape just for a bit in what is surely a one-off emergency.
The suggestion was for preservation. Funding is an entirely separate isse that would need consideration later. At the moment, Network Rail foot the whole bill. I'm sure they would welcome the opportunity to have access to other funds. In Córdoba in Spain, the Cathedral/Mosque is partly state funded, partly tourism funded and partly funded by the Roman Catholic Church. As a World Heritage site, ...
Hopefully everyone is expecting these by now and is prepared A Warning is in force for the South Devon Coast from Start Point to Dawlish Warren. Although tide levels are expected to be much lower than our still water criteria for issuing a flood warning there is a risk of flooding from wave action at exposed coastal locations. There could be further damage to coastal defences weakened by previous ...
A robber not caught since he absconded from a prison in the Midlands last year may be in Dawlish, police have said. Daniel Walker, 28, went missing from HMP Sudbury in Derbyshire when he was released on temporary licence in May last year. West Midlands Police believe Walker, jailed for robbery in 2006, may be in the Dawlish area of Devon. Walker, originally from Willenhall, in the West Midlands, ...

Residents in a Devon town have spoken of how they were evacuated from their crumbling homes after waves destroyed coastal defences as fearsome storms sweeped in from the Atlantic. Now another band of heavy rain is forecast to sweep across southern Britain today, with a separate area of low pressure bringing more rain and very strong winds on Saturday. Neil Jones and his son Issac were among the 50 ...
The Army has the means to rebuild the wall but before they can be used the powers that be have to call a state of emergency . A further problem will be the continuing bad weather do you put lives over property and can this work be carried out while we have one severe weather front after another. The problem with these events is we all get wound up because we perceive that nothing is being done but ...
People are asking about donating money to help those affected by flooding in the town over the weeks to come The Town Council is setting up a Relief Fund for people affected by flooding. More news within days as a few legalities to sort ( Isn't there always in this modern world ? ) but you can start gathering money now and hold on to it for a few days please. Parts of Britain are being hit by a powerful storm which has washed away a stretch of railway line and left thousands of homes without electricity. The Environment Agency says around 328 homes have been flooded since Friday evening - with more heavy rain forecast into the weekend. A section of the sea wall in Dawlish, Devon, collapsed and left the main railway line suspended in mid-air. David ...
Just to report back on the situation at the Leisure Centre, as I appreciate people are concerned it's very orderly, most people are sorted with safe accommodation and arrangements are being made for those who need more help. People are still shocked by the upheaval in their lives, and worried about the future However, the phrase I keep hearing is, count our lucky stars it could have been worse. ...
