Seems the cost to the local economy will be even greater now than at first thought given that the bad weather has lengthened the time before the Dawlish rail line will be operating again. Thank you, that's really encouraging.  Please be assured however that a whole host of people are working hard to make things better (Or at least as good as it can be given the situation locally and nationally), It's a team effort

As Micheal said, I was merely clarifying the situation and answering a query from carer. Having reviewed what I wrote I don't understand where the ambiguity comes.

Somerset levels get flooded weeks ago, oh that's  a shame. Dawlish loses it's railway line, people are evacuated. Oh dear, never mind. The Thames, bursts it banks, houses flooded. All hands to the wheel, we'd better do something.

A topical, if somewhat poignant, concession still available for those aged 60+  is the Senior Citizens Railcard.  £30 a year for the card gets a third off Standard and First Class Anytime, Off-Peak and Advance fares throughout GB. Anyone know of any other travel concessions for the aged 60 and above? Air Travel? Coach Travel? Holidays?

If the existing line becomes a branch line - that doesn't reduce the costs of maintenance.  They still have to repair it in the event of more sea damage. (and maintaining the cliffs at places like Shell Cove -  on the landside, the red cliffs are weakening and prone to landslide) It's  binary - either keep it, and invest in making it as impregnable as 21st century engineering allows - or walk ...

It's an excuse for the Tories to try to divert attention from their slashing of the EA budget by £75 million each and every year.  Factually, the wildlife survey is for the Warren element of the wider project. Any building work would not have started yet anyway - wildlife survey or not!

The suggestion was for preservation. Funding is an entirely separate isse that would need consideration later.  At the moment, Network Rail foot the whole bill.  I'm sure they would welcome the opportunity to have access to other funds.  In Córdoba in Spain, the Cathedral/Mosque is partly state funded, partly tourism funded and partly funded by the Roman Catholic Church.  As a World Heritage site, ...
