The South West peninsula’s economy would enjoy a £6 billion windfall if the Government invested in electric trains to serve the entire region, a report reveals today.


Against calls for heavy investment in railways in the far South West, an independent report has revealed for the first time the benefits of ditching diesel engines in favour of electric trains all the way from the capital to Penzance.

The region’s politicians and businesses leaders have said they are “rock solid united” behind the Rail Task Force’s three-point plan for rail investment, which includes shoring up the Dawlish coastal line, two new inland routes, upgrading the flood-prone line east of Exeter and electrification.
