Amazingly the racket coming from the top of Haldon on old airport land; what used to be called a 'rave' I think.. Couple of police cars now there to supervise departure, but they packed up some time ago and now just people drifting away.

The area opposite the station is indeed a serious hazard zone, and must surely have to be rethought. Ironically the book shop featured in Book Collector Magazine as the 'Bookshop of the Month'. Sadly the magazine promptly went bust, followed in short order by the shop. It does seem to make more disturbance than the Teignmouth one. And they often seem to clutter up the pavement. Perhaps they'll read your comments and learn - a trader can't succeed without winning customer's approval and local goodwill.

Those of us with longer memories will recall that when VAT was introduced in 1973 (as a consequence of the UK joining the European Economic Community) the standard rate stood at 10%, reducing to 8% in 1974. Probably it all seemed like a good idea at the time.....

And given the problems being caused in this country (and the world) by overpopulation and general overcrowding, is it a good idea for the tax system to reward people for breeding? Should we not be considering disincentives to breed?

Walking up a road in Starcross yesterday I was dodging dog muck all over the pavement - and obviously from several dogs - when I noticed that I was about ten paces away from a red dog muck disposal bin! There's really NO excuse for this anti-social behaviour.

It looks horribly as if the Deli in the Strand just bit the dust. If so this is awful for the town; without any doubt the best food shop/cafe in Dawlish. Let's hope this is just a hiccup and they're back soon.

We went down this road a few years ago. Teignbridge Council is responsible for keeping the beach clean, and the railway is responsible for the wall and slipways. There was a scrolling news device in the police station window recording their (police) activities that said something along the lines that they had received complaints about drinking on the lawns, but had had a word with the guilty parties who had promised to be good in the future. With the mess in High Street the blind turn outside Costcutters has become lethal, with cars parked on double yellows all over the place meaning that traffic sometimes comes round the bend on the wrong side of the road and completely blind. Many countries experienced difficulties after the banking crash but were better placed to move into recovery, unlike us who are suffering from the ridiculous amount of debt amassed by the current government whose spending has been out of control for years. It is for this that we will all have to suffer.

I think the answer is because people drove like lunatics down High Street, especially at night. I've seen some still driving like lunatics despite the road works!

Sadly that seems to be the case. It was OK for a while, but if you had wanted to go in more recently it always looked as if you had to push through a load of drunks cluttering up the entrance. The appearance was offputting.

A good and useful summary, and we're ready to keep spreading that word! (But fingers very much crossed).

I think the second part of your query is answered in one of the information boards posted along the route of the railway - I think the one just above Coastguards. As I recall a local big-wig had a house on the cliff at that point, and objected to the idea of local riff-raff walking by and peering into his property. So, to accommodate him, the path was dropped to its current partly useless height. ...

I always wonder why almost all of the taxi drivers in Dawlish are so rude to other road users, always barging through and never acknowledging you if you wait to let them through. Don't they know that other drivers can be customers too?
