While Harrison's Amusements has gone from it's gaming mecca days in the 1980's where you could spend hours playing the latest and greatest arcade games to today where it's full of naff fruit machines, one thing has stood firm against the sands of time - the Sooty and Sweep machine situated just outside one of the main doors. Each year my friends and I would visit Dawlish, and one of the small highlights was the sight of the machine, still working at the front of the venue. My girlfriend, friend and I travelled down from Bristol today, for a day trip, and one of our ports of call was to be the Sooty and Sweep machine. Imagine our distress when we discover that it's no longer there! We did try and find a member of staff on the shop floor to speak to, in an effort to find out what had become of the machine, but unfortunately we had no luck grabbing someone. A friend of mine who lives fairly local to Dawlish is pretty sure it was there around two weeks ago. Can any Dawlish locals shine some light on this mystery? If the machine has been removed from the site, I hope it's gone to a collector instead of the great skip in the sky. Has another slice of my mis-spent youth vanished?

I noticed this had gone when passing the other day. The only positive thing I could think of about Harrisons was this and it looks as if they've got shot of it!

Perhaps its gone for a refurb. After all Sooty and his gang were looking a bit thread bare in thier confinment. I reckon that its gone up to Yorkshire to the Sooty museum in Shipley to live out the rest of its life in retirement..

They were indeed looking more than a little threadbare, and Sue was looking almost possessed, what with her sunken eyes and all, but it just added to the charm. I'm just hoping that it's gone to a collector or a museum instead of ending up in a skip.

Fantastic! Thanks so much for letting me know. I'll have to take a look the next time I'm down there.

Dawlish wouldn't be the same without it!
