Is there a timetable of these steam trains coming through Dawlish (online or otherwise)? Would love to take kids down to see them, especially those that stop at the station

Talked to a worker there last night and he told me, it was just the usual rumour mill at work. He said it has and expects to continue with a large revenue and is staying open regardless

Hmmm ...... call me old fashioned, but it takes all the excitement away when always things are readily available and there is no anticipation. Fruit buns on sale is one thing, but to put a cross on them? Why? @FredBassett - i like your thinking though. i would imagine that would be well tasty

Whingeing or pointing out blemishes that locals might have just got used to over the years? A fresh pair of eyes has always got to be a good thing surely? Especially when backed up by solid ideas, offers of help, volunteering etc. Locals or newbies, we are all now in it together :-)

Whatever happened to local business supporting local people. who in return will support the local businesses? Case in point, I drove past a local butcher today in Torquay. Their prices included £10 per kg rump steak, £10 for 5lbs of pork chops or £4.99 per kg, steak mince £2.99 per kg. a brace of pheasants for £8.00 .......... I know where I will be stopping off next time.

To be fair though, I have offered my services free of charge and offered suggestions, all via email and not even had the courtesy of an acknowledgement that my emails were received :-(

..... and STILL the work continues! New pic uploaded. Opening date of 22/10/12, put back to 29/10/12, then to 05/11/12 ..... then on the 06/11/12 new scaffolding has been erected and bridge still not open. I've been away and haven't had chance yet to find out new estimate for it being open for use?

@Jasonclatworthy - and a damn fine job you did too! i was stunned just how "quick & easy" it all happened. which of course like my line of work, true professionals can make anything look easy. Well done that man I say!!! Awesome stuff.

Re ripening - yep, bananas will do it, as will apples (that can still be eaten, as opposed to the black bananas). All due to the gas; ethylene. But the fruits must be covered (as you say) in newspaper or cloth, which traps the ethylene. In the trade, I often used to 'bury' inripe avocados, mangoes & pawpaw in the rice bin to speed up thier softening. The rice traps the natural ethylene around the ...

Looked for a great vantage point that I could easily take the same shot each time :-) I will take a pic each time any work is done, no matter how minor .... so you may have to play "spot the difference" ;-) As to the order, that's all sorted, the first pic to appear will be the latest one. I did last when I first got here last year see a set of then & now pics of the town. ...

update - went out looking for pumpkins and could only find butternut squash on offer, so its in baking ready for some soup for dinner. Anyone have any other varieties growing? Particularly, spaghetti squash?

Dawlish all the way!! Beautiful town, great sea wall walks, stunning river stroll ..... then a train ride to Topsham for the antique shops and the antique market. But a stop at Dawlish is a MUST!!

@Andysport - if weather and pending grandchild permits, how about enjoying the view at the marine tavern? send me a text, then if i am rushing off to delivery/maternity i can let you know

@neilh - i have a few, not many but i will post them as i get the time over the weekend. in the meantime you can make crabapple cheese & butter with them (as per my blackberry recipes)
