Christmas in Dawlish

What's happened! The lights in the Strand and the lights over the brook seem to have given up. The shops in the main centre have made less effort than normal, not a Christmas tree in sight if your driving through. Congratulations to the top end of the town who have put the Strand traders to shame.

Its all about money and posibly Health & Safety bullshit with a little bit of insurance issues thrown in for good measure. Christmas is now only about increased sales on credit of course and profit, its no longer a joyfull celebration with an extended family holiday to make the winter seem a little more bearable. As for the religious side, well that seems to have disapeared all together most churches now seem to be glorified charity shops selling teas and buns on the side.

I thought the shops would have made more effort this year, perhaps their waiting for 2013 when the regeneration has been done, but that maybe too late.

You only have to watch the local news and see other small towns show how it should be done.

@Brazilnut

I totally agree with you. Teignmouth put their decorations and lights up long before Dawlish, but then again they did have a lot more to put up!

Aren't the lights the exact same as last year?

Whatever happened to the Christmas Tree we used to have in front of the bandstand?

In view of the fact we have now become a 24/7 society, this could be the reason for the death of the Christmas Spirit!!!!!!

This was sent out this afternoon by Dawlish Chamber of Trade;

"  The festive lights on the Strand are not working but are being looked at.  Watsons have inspected them but, unfortunately, due to the heavy rain the damage is ingress of water.  As soon as the rain stops they will re-check to see what can be done to solve the problem."

What utter tripe!

Christmas is about sharing time with family and friends (with a bit of the God stuff thrown in if that's your thing).

You don't need fairy lights to do that!

@HuwMatthews2 and duckileaks.

I see where your coming from, but if you want to sell you have to make things look inviting. e.g if you want to sell your car would you not clean it first.

@Teddy Bears, i walked past the window just this afternoon & thought how nice it looked. unfortunately, mine are just a bit too old for teddies & the like now but it's nice to see that someone is making an effort. you're not too far away from gay's so might benefit from some of their customers wandering past. good luck for the festive season.
