Shop I saw fragments of unrealised dreams in the starred window where an old poster for the National Lottery proclaimed, “It could be you.” Free newspapers were heaped inside the door, still being delivered despite the dereliction. Bootfranked post lay scattered and trampled on the floor amidst dead flies and a broken ladder had been thrown in a corner beside an upside-down till. A damp-stained ...

One could argue that the (very belated) intention in the US to take a firmer line on doping in sport simply makes Lance Armstrong unlucky to have been caught. Perhaps he annoyed the USADA enough for them to take action. If his relationship with his team mates had been better, he probably would have continued to get away with it. It seems to me, as one who knows nothing about cycling, that the ...
I haven't seen the car park but I would have thought that £2000 could pay for a lot of cleaning up.
Simple as I am, I cannot see how setting aside such an area makes " a carbon neutral holiday destination. " The destination itself, i.e. Cofton Country Holidays, who presumably dreamed up this marketing bullshit, is neither more nor less carbon neutral than it was before. I am weary of spurious claims to environmental cuddliness. (Which bank was it that paraded its desire to reduce printing costs ...
The great advantage of having an appointed FOI Officer is that it is like having a Quality Manager, a Health and Safety Officer or a ( fill in your own favourite ) It enables everyone else to avoid answering the questions that they do not want to answer. It is a splendid delaying tactic and any follow-up questions can be subject to similar delay It works in situations where you can't refuse to ...
A lot of trees spend a great deal longer dying than we do living.
@stephen15 Allowing webmaster to check from his side, there are various other possibilities that relate to your own pc. How long have you been using ie9? Have you been using it for some time and it has only recently started freezing? Disabling add-ons in ie9 might help. http://support.microsoft.com/mats/ie_freezes_or_crashes/en-us Have you run a malware scan? I suggest running a full scan with ...
I have seen this (or one very similar) before. The most notable thing about it is its smugness.
.... and Happy Christmas to all forum users. @cheftallyrand I can't help observing that your cookery articles deserve a wider online audience than will be provided by Dawlish.com. Thankyou for your efforts. I am doing my best to sample as many types of the best New Zealand pies as I can, notably from "The Fridge" in Kingsland, Auckland. I am reading "Pie" by Dean Brettschneider for inspiration and ...
In principle, I am talking in the abstract, although a vision of Teignmouth Town Council did enter my head. I don't know about Dawlish Town Council, other than what I read here. My other visions involve constant interference making it impossible to take a strategic view and its opposite, a lack of oversight allowing the manager to act freely. In either case, it would give the council an obvious ...
@Lynne , Done.
@Nelson That is the first of your posts that has genuinely made me laugh out loud, Don
I assume that the "chestnut trees" in question are the horse chestnut trees on the lawn. They are not a native species, having only been introduced in the 1500s and many centuries after the Romans brought us rabbits and the black walnut. The concept of native flora and fauna is, in such circumstances, as meaningless as when applied to people. I love the horse chestnuts on the lawn and the idea of ...
@flo I decided to write it as "directly" in case chef did not recognise "dreckly." If he doesn't, he soon will and realise its connotation - that it will be finished when it's finished, no doubt before his grandchild starts school. Don
I can't help other than to say that pheasants are obtainable in Teignmouth from Redfern's and Lloyd Maunder's butchers and from Kate's Great Catch fishmongers. In passing, I was given some porcini today (heh, heh!) Guess who is having risotto for his tea? Don
"His swan" he calls her, but she owns him not.
A very good article, thank you.
I might say more if I thought you were interested in my opinions. As it is, you are sniping and missing.
It is probably like the displays of public grief after the death of Kim Jong-il. A newish Tory MP probably has to appear overcome with emotion at the wisdom of her glorious leader and the policies of the Party.
I agree about the pastry as very important - a good filling can be spoiled by the pastry. I always buy pasties cold because keeping them in heated cases causes them to become greasy. I will have a go using skirt which is my favourite - ideal for steak and kidney pie or pudding and for the Massaman curry that I made yesterday
Deli Delicious have phoned me to let me know when something I have asked for is back in stock, even if it has been weeks after I was last in there. That sort of customer service from local shops will not be provided by a supermarket.
Look at Bishopsteignton or Abbotskerswell - never mind the road access, let's build houses.
@leatash Good news. I don't want to put off anybody who is happy with their supplier. Don
On second thoughts, I shall abandon the CFC idea. It would be difficult to deliver on a promise to cause more chaos than the incumbents in a lot of town councils.
With no comment as to whether the account was hacked, it could be quite straightforward if one had access to the machine from which the application was used (or if the same password was used for other applications on that machine.)
The tone of the article, the quotes and the readers' views show how people interpret matters according the their own ideas and perspectives.
@Philip Thanks, but you certainly have no need to apologise to me. I would hope that visitors/ tourists etc. appreciate that this forum does cover serious issues alongside its other posts. I think that the dawlish.com home page does a pretty good job of covering the introduction to Dawlish.
@bryony Good post. According to the politicians the unemployed fall into two categories: Those who are unable to work because of sickness or disability. On this basis, one might imagine that they are also unable to carry out much voluntary work. Those who are job seekers. They are supposed to spend their time demonstrably seeking work and should not have much time left over for voluntary work. Don
There could be new road signs - "Dawlish Welcomes Careful Doggers" and the Town Council could issue dogging licences.
@willosindawlish I am not clear what it is that you are saying. I know that this is a low crime area - that is the point. In the late Sixties I lived in Liverpool 8 (Toxteth) and, even then, the police patrolled only in armoured land rovers like an occupying army. Subsequently, I was in London for many years. When I moved to Teignmouth, I couldn't believe that the flashing blue lights were almost ...
Poppies (For Liam O’Neill and in memory of my grandparents) The poppy’s capsule oozes juice That brings us sleep, helps ease our pain. On one more continent the seeds Are mixed with dust and blood as we Forget that we must not forget. The poppies bloom, their beauty fades, Their petals scatter on the ground In Flanders or in Afghan fields. While poppies weep their latex tears, We plant our flowers ...
I think this is one of the most interesting and best conducted threads I have seen on Dawlish.com with a wide variety of views presented constructively and without abuse.
I am all in favour of local celebrations and street parties. I just feel that it is a shame that they are so often associated with events concerning the royal family.
Bad dog, Neilh! Stop worrying that poor man's empty sleeve or you'll be sent to your basket.
@webmaster I have no problems with the way you exercise your judgement over the forum. It is obvious that you think carefully before you make your decisions. Don
No. My friends include benefit scroungers, alcoholics and heroin addicts. I am after the whited sepulchres.
