But who would define what was and what was not something political? The Webmaster? Fine. But that definition had better be clear wouldn't want any of us to be running foul of the rules of engagement......

Would Roberta's thread concerning the new proposals for pricing alcohol be considered political for example, or the thread concerning the price of petrol?

Courtesy of Wikipedia we have a definition:

Politics (from Greek πολιτικός, politikos "of, for, or relating to citizens") is the process by which coercive power is legitimately applied. The term is generally applied to the art or science of running governmental or state affairs, including behavior within civil governments, but also applies to institutions, fields, and special interest groups such as the corporate, academic, and religious segments of society. It consists of "social relations involving authority or power"[1] and refers to the regulation of public affairs within a political unit,[2] and to the methods and tactics used to formulate and apply policy.[3]

So there you have it. Clear as mud.

Hey!

I mean no direspect by that !

Just that national issues, that do have a bearing on Dawlish, maybe could do with a category of their own?

What about local issues that are repeated across the UK and should be national issues? Another category?

Alternatively, we could ask the Webmaster to set up a watershed so that political posts are only visible after right-thinking people's bedtime.

As I believe that almost any local issue has a political dimension, I suggest that we leave things as they are.

" Alternatively, we could ask the Webmaster to set up a watershed so that political posts are only visible after right-thinking people's bedtime."

Hmm, so only wrong-thinking people are left awake to read them.

Or folks tending to vote for left inclined parties?

And who are the right thinking folks anyway ......... (your way?)

This is just the sort of stuff that, IMHO, should be on a seperate page. Leaving Dawlish stuff on a welcoming page that visitors/tourists/new to the town, can get an insite to what a great little town you (and now me) have.

I used to make it obvious when I was frivolling. Perhaps I still should.

Suffice it to say that I am one of the people that right-thinking people call wrong-headed, immature or just plain stupid.

Ah! But as was pointed out right at the top of this thread - just what is and just what ain't political isn't necessarily something that is easily defined.

Would Dawlish's Portas Bid be defined as being political for example?

Would the state of Dawlish's roads be defined as being political?

The empty shops?

The price of petrol?

The Dawlish Local Plan?

What the town council is up to?

You get my drift?

And anyway if visitors/tourists/those new to the town (or those who have lived here for some time for that matter) start to read a thread (any thread) and get bored with its contents then there is a very simple thing they can do ........they can stop reading it.

PS What does pmsl mean?

Sorry Don and Lynne.

I guess you're right.

@Philip

Thanks, but you certainly have no need to apologise to me.

I would hope that visitors/ tourists etc. appreciate that this forum does cover serious issues alongside its other posts. I think that the dawlish.com home page does a pretty good job of covering the introduction to Dawlish.
