Will any of the Dawlish jubilee events have a fund raising for charities angle?

Why should it? Let's just celebrate a once in a lifetime event and enjoy it for what it is! I'm really pleased that someone is doung something in Dawlish for this occasion. I just hope that the usual nay-sayers don't try to put a dampener on it!!!!

When I hear fund raising is involved it puts me off. Let's face it, there are more charities, charity shops and fundraising schemes than there has ever been and has this made a jot of different in to world?

Most charities and trusts, like the Devon Air Ambulance and Coastguards, should not even be charities. These essential services should be funded by taxes. I would have no issue with seeing £x towards the Devon Air Ambulance and other similar organisations on my council tax bill. Make the police department a chairty. It is not as if they are there when you need them anyway.

So, no lets not spoil the Jubilee by turning it into a fundraising event.

Agree Steve J , lets forget fundraising this week, Im sure the costs will be huge so as long as they cover their outgoings thats fine

I only had those less fortunate in mind. I just thought that as the royals have such wealth and privilege and that as the vast majority do not have anything like that a little thinking about those not so fortunate would not go amiss. Like for those at the bottom of the pile for whom things will only get worse this year - more unemployment, more homelessness, more not knowing how to pay the bills.

HM and her family will never, ever, know any of that.

So celebrate wealth and privilege if you want to.

But I shan't be doing so.

I'd enjoy the fun if I believed that what you are going to celebrate was worth celebrating.

I don't.

So I won't.

I couldn't give two hoots about the Royals. I just like having time off work. That is something to celebrate.

I too shall be working, but I reserve my democratic right to celebrate the fact that the head of our state has been in office for 60 years by raising a toast to Madge whilst eating a traditional British meal. Chicken Tikka Masala and a pint of lager. And because it's a celebration thread, I won't get into a debate about the nett worth of the royal family to our economy. God Save The Queen!

And yes, I am one of the group of people that are giving of their free time to try and give Dawlish a week to remember! I have read with interest the comments made and am glad that townsfolk are supporting us and what we are trying to do. The week is full of things to help the town and its traders to capitalise on what we hope will be a really well supported event! Thanx to all of you - Rob C

Lynne - how easy you find it to "defend the defenceless poor downtrodden people" and then without any hint of irony you have a go at a women in her 80s who has had her life planned out for her, pretty much since birth, and has never been able to make her own choices but has devoted her life and energy to serving her country in the best way she can, or is it the fact that in her ancestry she has German blood and you just wanted to be a bit racist?

The Queen cannot help her birth, any more than you can. But be honest with yourself, you might like the idea of being Royal for a day, a week or even a month, but for LIFE? I wouldn't do it and I bet you ouldn't either not if you really truly think about everything involved, day in, day out, for your whole life.

So something that has only happened in our country twice EVER, a monarch has been on the throne for 60 years and you can't even bring yourself to just relax and enjoy the moment, just briefly, just to actually acknowledge the sacrifices she HAS made, whether you like to acknowledge them or not.

Get over yourself Lynne and frankly, grow up.

You are not seriously suggesting that that Queen and her family are in any way defenceless, poor and downtrodden are you?

Many others have also had their lives planned out for them pretty much since birth - those at the other end of the socio-economic food chain.

She could always have abdicated and become a private citizen, she had that choice, and even then she would have had enjoyed a life of luxury compared to so many in this country.

Battenburg, German origins - nothing rascist. A fact.

That I disagree with you and others over attitude towards the royal family has nothing to do with maturity. It is a matter of opinion.

And I am quite grown up, thank you.

No Lynne you are not quite grown up, you just want to guilt people into the idea that they are not allowed to have a bit of fun, enjoying a special occasion, without feeling the need to put their hand in their pocket yet again for a charity collection.

You have no knowledge of the financial situation of a lot of people who will be celebrating, yet you would be quite happy for them to have to pay up for some charity of other. If it makes you feel better Lynne then donate your earnings during Jubilee Week to a charity of your choice, but leave others alone to enjoy the week in peace.

Is it wrong that my iPod has just shuffled to God Save The Queen by the Sex Pistols, and I immediately thought of this thread! I need to get a life!!!!

Lynne

03 Mar 2012 10:48

I am not making people feel guilty. Goodness, how powerful I would be if I could do that!

People will feel guilty or not. Up to them and how they see the world and their place in it.

I will continue to keep the issue of the poor in the public mind as best I can. Which was the point of my raising the collecting for charity issue.

Do I have monies to spare? No, I do not. But then I have no intention of celebrating the fabulous wealth of someone else. If I get asked for a donation to charity I decline (although I am in the habit of buying The Big Issue) .People don't have to give to charity. There are other ways as witnessed by some of my other postings on this website, to raise issues concerning those worse off than myself.

It is not that people are wishing to have some fun that I find difficult to accept. Far from it. Good luck. It is what they are celebrating in the fun that I have problems with.

You are right, I don't have any idea of the financial situation of a lot of the people who will be celebrating but if they are feeling financiaI hardship and insecurity then I find it even more mind boggling that they should wish to celebrate such wealth and privilege.

Just because I have a different 'take' than you on all of this (and there are others by the way who have views similar to mine) doesn't make me or those who think like me not grown up.

We could just as easily say that it is all of you, who wish to celebrate the jubillee, who do not have grown up views.

I am all in favour of local celebrations and street parties. I just feel that it is a shame that they are so often associated with events concerning the royal family.

Don

You're right that local festivities ofter concern events of a royal nature, but can you suggest anything else that would prompt people to take to the streets in celebration - the end of war comes to mind but nothing else seems to unite people in this way.

Sorry to disappoint some of you (esp. Nelson) but the Party In The Park on 4th June is being put on by the RBL Dawlish Branch. Although I imagine they hope everyone has a good time, it will be a charity fund raiser for the Poppy Appeal and other legion works.
