Willos for carrot cake and decent mug of tea at really good price. No 1 for delicious pannini's (lovely seeded bread) Cream tea's at Old Mill Tearoom Carvery at the Smugglers (their lasagne is good too) Not quite in Dawlish but I love the Ship Inn at Cockwood - really good food. I find the Mount Pleasant Inn to be a bit hit and miss - have had some good meals but equally when they're just cooking ...

I would hope it wasn't the owners - both women are really nice and would be very upset to hear of this experience.

User 4549 - I think Lynne has posted a list of the electors who called for the election not the candidates. The first six on the list are either former Lib Dem councillors or their husband/wife. I heard today that VFD do have a candidate, but I know nothing about him/her.

Quite good so far, time will tell I supose.

Actually the result was a complete shock to the Tories, they'd complacently believed they'd get in again. That was their biggest mistake, that and putting up a candidate they had barely spoken to.

Hmmmm, well I doubt that the Waterfowl Warden or the rest of the Town Council staff will be round long enough to do it - unless the new DTC get their act in gear and pay them properly. (Dawlish Gazette) I would be surprised if volunteers would be welcomed - nobody in the Council offices to do a risk assessment or ensure the insurance is in place.

I think you could possibly be right about them becoming white elephants. They won't be hugely busy in the winter, but they aren't interested in individual shops just group profits and having a shop everywhere!

It was £25k a couple of years ago - they had extra from the sale of Exeter Airport. I think it's great that Cllrs can target local groups/projects that need help without the groups having to jump through hoops to get the money. District Cllrs have an allowance too - I think £1500 (from memory).

When 70% of people living in Dawlish already do their weekly shop at Tescos or Sainsburys is having the supermarkets closer going to make that much difference? The Co-op is ok for top-up shopping but not much else, I'd struggle to buy a full shop at the Dawlish one and as they seem to have trawled the area to staff the Teignmouth one with the most ignorant, rude people around I don't go there ...

Sorry DawlishBlue, but the person collecting money still has to go round collecting it regardless of how many people pay by card - some still pay by cash so the machine has to be emptied. It is a convenient way to pay if you need it, we've all left the house sometimes without enough change to park - it's pigging annoying, you've got too choose then, risk a ticket or search for somewhere to park ...

My turn - I hoped to start a debate possibly involving several members of this forum, I hoped for some genuine feedback, I had genuine questions that I would have liked answered. Weather lovely at the moment, hope you enjoy your stay. If people feel strongly about the seagulls then it should be taken back to councils to look at the issue. New councils soon who may have different ideas regarding signage, by-laws and fines etc.

Remove housing benefit and six members of my immediate family would be homeless! I haven't got room to house them, mind you I could fit the grandchildren in my shed, they're still small. Lazlo - having once had a business in Dawlish that employed local people I'd just like to point out that I couldn't afford to pay more than minium wage. I was taking less for myself than that! If you're not making the money you can't pay it out, it's that simple. Holidaymakers come to Dawlish (and other places too) expecting a cheap holiday and won't pay premium prices, when they've paid a tenner ...

So what do we think then, is this election going to be only about local issues? Are poeple going to use this opportunity to tell their sitting candidates that they don't want them any more? Or will it be a chance to show how you feel about coalition government? Or more likely will it be the usual apathy that abounds in Dawlish?

I should imagine Cllr Clatworthy rarely takes the time to read this forum. I'd love to see him comment though! All aspects of the expense of further education worries me, like you Lynne I have a child hoping to enter further education this autumn. I am deeply concerned about the costs involved but want to appear supportive. My worries are not so much for the A level time but what follows after, ...

TCC already have a sixth form, the problem is that not all schools are able to offer the courses that the colleges do. Seems to me that successive governments want our kids to go to further education but they make it hard to do so - bonkers!

I keep reading and hearing people suggesting that Councillors are taking backhanders. Might I suggest that the proof is brought forward for us all to share in. That will certainly help me with my voting decisions in May. Won't hold my breath waiting, seems to be the usual, groundless whingeing that seems prevalent in Dawlish. I look forward to apologising when I'm proved wrong....

@FRONTERAMAN Just to point out that I know of 3 poss 4 current councillors (Town Council) not standing at the next elections - so at least one of the main parties will be looking for candidates. I'd like to see more independent candidates providing they are truly independent and just not stating their political affiliation or party membership (as I suspect will happen)

I for one am looking forward to seeing who the Independent candidates will be. I have my political preferences but they should be kept out of politics at such a local level and I know that some of our current councillors feel the same way - I asked them! (the same councillors told me that it's virtually impossible to get elected as just one independent and that they vote for Dawlish not party ...

I hope all those critics of the councillors will be standing at the next elections in May. I look forward to reading their manifestoes. (Genuinely, I want to see what a difference can be made by those who are currently outside of council) Hopefully the mailshots will be better than the Lib Dem one through my door today - a load of twaddle and how sad to see that Mr Protheroe is standing again for ...

I also was a victim of bullying whilst at secondary school, also not Dawlish. What I find interesting is how, over the years, what was considered 'picking on' someone (ie low level bullying generally involving teasing and horseplay) which is a daily part of school life and never of much note when I was at school, - has now evolved into being described as full on bullying. Not wishing to downplay ...
