Apologies in advance. Yes, I know this is a long thread and that I've put a lot of postings on it and I had promised myself that I would give it a rest for a while but then I was reading the Sunday Telegraph online and an article about housing and then I started to read the comments underneath the article and then I read this particular comment and then......oh well....... read it for ...
Bank holiday events Following the success of last year’s Let’s all go down the Strand event Dawlish Town Council will again be holding this a Street Party style event with stalls along The Strand on Saturday 24th May from 11.00am until 5.00pm. Extract from letter dated 1-4-14 from NR (Patrick Hallgate, Western Route Managing Director), Network Rail, to Newton Abbot MP, Anne Marie Morris. “With respect to the future improvement in resilience of the railway between Exeter St Davids and Newton Abbot my Route Asset Management Team is currently commissioning a major engineering feasibility study. This study has been initiated by the Route ...
In case folks missed it. There is an article in the latest edition of The Town Crier about garden sharing (see bottom page 2). Basically Dawlish Transition are wanting to match together those who have gardens/land but are unable to use them with folk who have no garden/land but would love to have one/some. Could you share your garden/land in return for some of its produce with someone who ...
and for those with a more academic inclination - post graduate degrees in spying are now on offer http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/msc-in-cyber-security-gchq-to-approve-postgraduate-degree-courses-in-spying-9242466.html
Totally agree with you Clive. It's what I've been getting at all along.
Yes I know about Bob's bike shop and of course I know about the multitude of eateries we have in the town. Not sure we have a lot of room for lots of bikes being parked up though. So, what I was(am) getting at is a one stop shop type of thing with plenty of room for bikes to park up, plenty of room for bikes to be stored for hiring and to be repaired enroute, and for it to be a eaterie as well. ...
Thought this might be of interest. BBC Spotlight Southwest covered this matter in last night's programme. Here is the iplayer link. It is the first item in the programme. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03xjwqw/Spotlight_12_03_2014/
Clive - you are a mine of information - do tell us more!

This is what the Mirror map shows for Teignbridge. Teignbridge Harbuck Housing, £253191 New Dawn Lettings, £111311 Cornerstone, £80944 Devon Rose, £73194 Barley Manor Properties, £55021 "On 30 January 1991 the then housing minister Sir George Young was asked in parliament what the government was going to do about unaffordable rents. ‘Housing benefit will underpin market rents - we have ...
Did anyone else register the irony that one of the options being considered by NR, the Teign Valley route, became impassable a few days ago because storms had washed the ballast away from the railway track. It's presently a single track and a train uses it once a week apparently to collect timber. See page 5 of this week's Gazette for picture and more info.
Just been watching the local BBC news. Seems the cost to the local economy will be even greater now than at first thought given that the bad weather has lengthened the time before the Dawlish rail line will be operating again. Thought I'd post this about the estimated cost in terms of loss to the local economy. This is from the BBC's website dated 6-2-14: (my emphasis in bold) "Devon and ...
Wonder if Will's 'The Tempest' has got any appropriate quotes?
A topical, if somewhat poignant, concession still available for those aged 60+ is the Senior Citizens Railcard. £30 a year for the card gets a third off Standard and First Class Anytime, Off-Peak and Advance fares throughout GB. Anyone know of any other travel concessions for the aged 60 and above? Air Travel? Coach Travel? Holidays?
Okay - just checked the taps again - a dribble. Checked next door - neighbour has the same problem but tells me that she knows of others nearby who have no supply at all. We are talking Higher Drive and Lower Drive area but of course others in other streets may be affected as well. I have now reported the fault to South West Water. Update:SWW have just phoned back (blimey there's service!). ...
Goes to show how you have to look behind the un/employment figures that are published in the press. Here's what Channel 4 news has to say on employment in London and employment elsewhere in the country. http://www.channel4.com/news/london-north-south-divide-cities (My point being, just in case you wondered, is that just because London in particular is creating jobs that doesn't necessarily ...
Oh yes! Our young people. For whom I despair and who I despair of. I'll start a new thread.

Planting in the Memorial Garden next to St. Gregory’s Church this Saturday, from around 10.00 am as usual and weather permitting. Planting at The Manor House on Sunday. Because of where we will be planting it will be helpful if you can bring a dibber with you as an alternative to a trowel.
The Manor House also hosts various classes and activities such as: A French class on Tuesday mornings 10am - 12noon. Other classes held at the Manor House include Bridge Club, Tai Chi, Yoga, Pilates, Keep Fit, Art Group and Dancing. For more info contact: mandy@dawlish.gov.uk

As per my first post - scroll down for more Exeter based Flybe vacancies. http://www.flybe.com/live/vacancies/jsp/ExistingVacancies.jsp
Just come back from the town. It is positively heaving with people and all high areas (Lea Mount, Sandy Lane Playing Fields, hill by The Smugglers) also full of people. Will be watching from the front and back windows of my house. Perfect weather for an air display. Must go now - Red Arrows have probably just taken off from Exeter Airport and due to arrive here shortly.
Here's hoping all those awaiting the results get the grades they need to do whatever it is they are (A Level results allowing) planning to do.
Have checked the job again. It's a vacancy for an Air Traffic Control Assistant (as in being an assistant to the air traffic controllers) as opposed to it being a vacancy for an Assistant Air Traffic Controller (which is what I originally typed). The placing of that word 'assistant' does, actually, make an awful lot of difference.

This has recently been posted on EoD. For a limited time only look out for museum volunteers handing out vouchers for a 2 for 1 offer at the museum or pick up a voucher at the Tourist Information Centre. If you're stuck for something to do during the school holidays entry for a family of 4 is only £2.50 with the voucher (normally £5 ) and children love to see the old toys, games , dolls and dolls ...
Yep. Not everyone has the D.Post delivered so therefore, I guess, they won't have had the Town Crier delivered.
There was an interesting letter about housing need and housing development in the Dawlish Gazette a few weeks back. In case you missed it, here it is. "State funding not forthcoming for affordable housing Wednesday, 19 June 2013 Stephen Jope, of Elm Grove Road, Dawlish, writes: The key to providing adequate quantities of social housing is to provide adequate state funding for the ...
There is an article on page 2 in this week's Dawlish Gazette about this. The article says that since January of this year the CAB (Citizen Advice Bureau) workers have been inundated with enquiries at the weekly sessions held at the Manor House. The paper reports that "rising debt is considered to be a major problem in Dawlish" and that "Debt inquiries have continued to rise accounting for 68% ...
Popped down to Duck Aller Farm today to buy some of their really tasty pork burgers and pork sausages (they do different flavours of pork sausage) and in passing I was told they had won first prize at this year's Devon County Show. I had no idea that they had done that and in case you didn't know either here's some info. http://www.duckallerfarm.co.uk/
@Carer As I thought I had implied in my posting - my comment about the Starcross RBL was an 'as we're on the subject of correct spelling, incorrect use of the apostrophe etc here is another example' type of comment. Off topic in terms of the Carnival I agree, but certainly on topic in terms of Duckileaks' comments about bad grammar etc. Might I make a suggestion? Should anyone want to ...
Went to Warren Farm boot fair yesterday. Charging 30p per pedestrian entrance fee. Don't know what they were charging for cars but did see some drive straight in and straight back out again. Yesterday, at the entrance to the bootfair, the organisers were showing a list of what they charge sellers. Believe the cheapest is £7.00 per car if selling second hand stuff. Charges increase if selling ...
Cuts to Welfare Benefits may be politically expedient (ie popular with the electorate) but in actual fact may not be that economically cost effective (as has been pointed out on other threads on this website). https://www.dawlish.com/thread/details/23031
