As long as this government thinks it has the vast majority of the electorate on its side re its approach to Welfare then it will continue to act in the way that it is. As I have said before though, whether or not such politically popular acts will prove to be cost effective is another matter entirely. Indeed, and again as I have pointed out before, even the government department for Communities ...

On this £26,000 pa issue. As I understand it that is the net national average salary. To net that amount you would need to gross about £36,000 pa. And as the figures quoted are the average I imagine they must be arrived at by including the millions earned by the relatively few as well as the part-time, minimum pay rate earned by the many. I agree that London and the south-east has ...

Just a reminder that this opened today!!!! (and I've already been over and bought some goodies). Scott says it will be open every day except Monday (but might be open this Monday). http://forestfungi.co.uk/aboutfs.html

That Huffington Post link that Bnut posted.............I have heard it said by quite a few who would know, that the origins of the expenses scandal that blew in 2009 could be traced back to the 1980s when, although it was deemed that MPs should be paid more, politically it was a No No for them to have a pay increase (remember the 1980s? high unemployment, cutting back on public sector expenditure ...

How much is it that a member of the House of Lords gets for just turning up.? £300 a day so I've heard. Now, that is not to say that I don't think members of both the Lords and the Commons shouldn't be properly remunerated. Of course they should. In fact, going against the grain I think that our MPs are underpaid for the work and the hours that they do (I await howls of protest about ...

There was an interesting letter about housing need and housing development in the Dawlish Gazette a few weeks back. In case you missed it, here it is. "State funding not forthcoming for affordable housing Wednesday, 19 June 2013 Stephen Jope, of Elm Grove Road, Dawlish, writes: The key to providing adequate quantities of social housing is to provide adequate state funding ...

There is an article on page 2 in this week's Dawlish Gazette about this. The article says that since January of this year the CAB (Citizen Advice Bureau) workers have been inundated with enquiries at the weekly sessions held at the Manor House. The paper reports that "rising debt is considered to be a major problem in Dawlish" and that "Debt inquiries have continued to rise accounting for ...

You must have beaten me to it! I was looking for garden stuff but didn't find anything. Didn't buy anything at all as it happens - as you say, lots of clothes and children's toys. Which is great if that is what you are looking for (and I am sure many were). Like you B'nut - I must be getting old....... P'raps I'll have better luck on Thursday afternoon at the Warren.
