Lynne, this is true. But you must look at the big picture with Will and Kate. Of all the memorabilia that sold in shops ect. At least they do make a contribution to the country. Many business's are making a living from them. What is this woman contributing to the country NOTHING.

and that is what the tory mouthpiece paper wants you to think, that all people on benefits are lazy scroungers. This story was published months ago and now they resurrect it, so that people can start again on the persecution of the most vunerable in society. I strongly object to my taxes paying for the MPs , Bankers and Corporate Tax dodgers but what can I do about it, one bad example does not mean everybody takes the p--s

I'm no fan of the Torys i can assure you and I agree with you about taxes going to Bankers ect. I know this story originated months ago while this house was being built and it was run in other newspapers as well not just the Mail..   I'm also in favour for people being helped that need it. But there is no justifcation for this family to be housed in a 500 thousand pound house. It is really going over the top. The United Kingdom is a welfare State and there are hundreds of thousands of people that deserve help. No they are not all benefit scroungers. This is not persecution. Try explaining to people that work long hours trying to support their family and pay the mortgage and or rent and all the other bills for the cost of living while bringing up just a couple of kids. This family had two houses knocked into one to live in. Can you honestly say that this is right to have a new big house built to her specifcations what she DEMANDED at the cost of you and everyone else in Dawlish and the country. I'm surprised Brazilnut that you think that this issue is ok.

I dont think its ok, its the fault of her local authority who gave into her demands, but what Im trying to say is there is nothing you or I can do, I can remember various examples like this over the years, and I know of cases closer to home where single mums with 1 child have been given brand new 3bedroom houses, who have never worked, but its a fault of the system, life is unfair and people who deserve get overlooked in favour of those who deserve nothing I have always worked and for 7yrs was on my own with 3 children so I know first hand how tough it can be.

@kenny.

No-one has done anything to BB's link.

If you read his post, he says about Pasting the link, so it's obvious that he unfortunately doesnt know how to do linked text.

Lynne underneath his post has supplied us with a clickable link.

How much is it that a member of the House of Lords gets for just turning up.? £300 a day so I've heard.

Now, that is not to say that I don't think members of both the Lords and the Commons shouldn't be properly remunerated. Of course they should. In fact, going against the grain I think that our MPs are underpaid for the work and the hours that they do (I await howls of protest about that). Perhaps we could have fewer MPs and fewer members of the House of Lords?

If we don't have proper pay then who can stand for parliament? Only those with money? And how will that lead to representation of the electorate in the Houses of P? It won't will it?

But I do get very very angry when I hear certain MPs and certain Lords attacking those who need support from the state.

That Huffington Post link that Bnut posted.............I have heard it said by quite a few who would know, that the origins of the expenses scandal that blew in 2009 could be traced back to the 1980s when, although it was deemed that MPs should be paid more, politically it was a No No for them to have a pay increase (remember the 1980s? high unemployment, cutting back on public sector expenditure etc. Sound familiar?)

Anyhows the upshot of the MPs not having the pay rise they needed in the 1980s because it wasn't policially acceptable that they should have one, led to the claiming of expenses for this that and goodness knows what else.  Which meant they got their pay rise via expense claims.

Personally I would much rather they were paid more and that there was a ban on having a second job whilst being an MP.

@kenny - yes I know the tories wanted to reduce the number of mps but the lib dems, for their part, wanted to reform the house of lords and reduce the numbers there. However, it seems a political spat within the coalition stopped both from happening.

Why not reduce the size of Parliament ie get rid of the Scottish Welsh and Irish

M.P's and have an English government only.

Bring back all the Army Navy and RAF bases to England so creating jobs and cancel

all Defence contracts with these countries.

Job Done.
