Add to your example people hearing what they think you are going to say rather than listening to what you actually say. People understand things they might not and do not understand things they should. There is a degree of scanning for key elements both in listening and reading.

Deli Delicious have phoned me to let me know when something I have asked for is back in stock, even if it has been weeks after I was last in there. That sort of customer service from local shops will not be provided by a supermarket.

The views of local people count for a great deal but both Teignmouth and Dawlish are tourist towns. The opinions of people who have visited are also important, whether positive or negative, and should not simply be dismissed because we don't like what they are saying.
I saw a couple of posts about the official opening on Eyes of Dawlish and had a takeaway last night. I thought the food was excellent and the staff very friendly. Well worth a try.
My daughter is married to a Kiwi and lives in Western Springs in Auckland. I have been out there twice and this time last year I was camping in the Waipoua forest. I love NZ and the food is marvellous - my only disappointment is the cheese. I have found no local cheeses to compare to the best English cheeses.
