New to Dawlish Chef Lecturer from New Zealand with experience in cooking demonstrations & consultancy. Looking for good local food suppliers (besides the GREAT local shops, butchers etc) e.g. meats, game, seafoods, cheesemakers, hunters & forages etc Also looking to network with like minded folks (=|:-)

As well as the butchers, greengrocers and delicatessans in town (no fishmongers unfortunately), we use Powderham Country store at Kenton for a wide selection of fresh LOCAL food (inc Brixham fish on Fridays and Saturdays).

Kate's Great Catch in Teignmouth is good for fish and game but no hapuka, I'm afraid. Has frozen game and can get hare if you ask.

Lloyd Maunder's is good for beef and has good smoked streaky bacon. Before Christmas they had phesants and partridge.

Ask around for the best pasties which are excellent. There is nothing to compare with NZ pies.

Plenty of good cheese - look for Quicke's cheddar which you can find locally. Montgomery's is my favourite but hard to find. There are plenty of fantastic cheesemakers in UK compared with NZ

Good sausages can be had from Wholesome Hog (posted by Lynne) and elsewhere.

Some fantastic bread can be found on a Wednesday at Proudly Pressed Dry Cleaner on Queen Street!!! (otherwise Bread of Devon at Newton Abbot Farmer's market on a Tuesday or on third Sat in Teignmouth)

Totnes is brilliant for top quality food - several good butchers, Riverford Farm Shop and Country Cheeses

http://www.countrycheeses.co.uk/ is the best cheese shop I know.

Fruit and vegetables - nowhere to touch Sheila Tibbs on the Triangle inTeignmouth.

I eat well and inexpensively without going near a supermarket except for coffee, chocolate and cat food.

A bit further afield try Gribbles butchers Ivybridge for Haldon venison - from the forests on Haldon above Dawlish.

I'm intrigued by which variety of cat food it is that Don prefers!

I prefer the biscuits from the local pet shop but my cats insist on Go Cat. However, they do seem to agree with my taste in fresh food and are happy to share it if I turn my back for a moment. They also like Marmite but they have yet to try Vegemite, unlike my granddaughter whose mum gives her Marmite and whose dad gives her Vegemite

If cheftallytand wants a flavour of home, Deli Delicious stocks (sometimes) some manuka smoked products from http://www.mikes-smokehouse.co.uk/ - I love the smoked duck and smoked chicken.

As for Pohutukawa honey, my jar is probably one of very few in the UK.

Cheers Don, I will check out the smoked products. If you Ike blue cheeses, try that honey drizzled over some Stilton ..... Delicious !! So what's your Kiwi Konnection?

My daughter is married to a Kiwi and lives in Western Springs in Auckland. I have been out there twice and this time last year I was camping in the Waipoua forest.

I love NZ and the food is marvellous - my only disappointment is the cheese. I have found no local cheeses to compare to the best English cheeses.

Aha .... I know both places well :-) Better your camping than my time, unfortnstely this time last year I was dealing with earthquakes & a mining disaster (organizing the catering for all the emergergency services) Re : cheeses - NZ best cheeses = UK mediocre cheeses (at best) :-( As a self confessed cheeseholic I am loving the availability (and cheapness compared to NZ) Still to find my favorite tho : Dorset Blue Vinney.

Hi Cheftallyrand. Welcome to Dawlish! Please try the Deli at the bottom of Brook Street (go past the library and round the corner). They make delicious quiches and pies, do the best cooked meat in town (beautiful rare roast beef) and Frank's Scotch eggs are unbeatable!

Found that Deli earlier this week :-) Owner tells me they are looking at selling up / closing down and taking life easier :-( Sad for us, good for them tho. Such a pity there s mo seafood place here tho, selling / specializing in cooked & raw "local" seafoods. Hmmmmmm ......... now there is "food for thought" (=|:-)

@cheftallyrand: you wanted some info on local produce markets?

The Dawlish Local Produce Market is held on the first Friday of each month. 10.00am to 2.00pm. Look out for the green and white stalls located on the Piazza near the tourist information centre. It's not a big market by any means and the number of stall holders varies throughout the year but I make a habit of going along and buying some bits and pieces from it. Mostly sauages, burgers, cheeses and preserves. There are more stalls during the tourist season for fairly obvious reasons.

Click on this link for info about the produce markets held at Newton Abbot

http://www.teignbridge.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1963

Hope the above is useful.

Hi Lynne Awesome! Thanks for that. Does that mean I missed out yesterday? I was up and around the town yesterday and didn't see anything :-(

I don't think it happened yesterday - or if it did it may have only been the one stall. January is a bit of a 'dead' month after all and last month there was not only the local produce market but also the Christmas market so I guess both punters and local producers had a glut of buying/selling then.

Next local produce market should take place first Friday in Feb.

At the Exeter Road end of Port Road opp St Mary's cottages is the Dawlish Gardens Trust. I think they are a learning centre for special needs people, but they certainly grow a lot of stuff, not sure if they still sell it locally, but they used to before they moved from Warren rd. The boss is called Ian I think

I'm sure you'll find most of what you need at Sainsburys, with the added advantage of free parking right outside the door.

Hi there, hope you are planning to do some cooking demos here in Dawlish? I understand the Red Rock has kitchens set up. It would be nice to have something here, similar to the cookering classes in Ashburton. I know people from London who come down for those.

Hi Flo well I was planning on a bit of a sabbatical. But that isn't working out as I'm already booked for some demos back in NZ later in the year and at a school in Plymouth. So who knows!? I am certainly open to suggestions for serious consideration, be it commercially or to support the local community. Red Rock? What / where is that? The only one I have come across so far is on the most splendid walk to Dawlish Warren.

The Redrock Centre is in Sandy Lane near the Leisure Centre. There is usually a manager on duty who could give you info about setting up demos or classes. Good luck.

And do support the town centre shops...not Sainsbury's. They need your custom more than a supermarket!!!
