Add to your example people hearing what they think you are going to say rather than listening to what you actually say. People understand things they might not and do not understand things they should.
There is a degree of scanning for key elements both in listening and reading.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize what you heard is not what I meant. Jack Cope
An example of people hearing things that have not been said.
Many moons ago now I worked as a housing assessment officer for a town council. Part of my job was to interview those wishing to go on the housing waiting list and to assess their need.
I learnt very early on not to say anything about how long it might take before we could house them or when they should check again to see the likelihood of their being rehoused.
For example ( and this actually happened which is why it is etched in my memory). I learnt not to say "Come back in 6 months time to find out what the situation is" as that was invariably interpreted as "In six months time we should be able to (re) house you".
I am sure we all have examples of us being misheard and of us mishearing others.
What's the word from the song? Oh yes, "Still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest" (The Boxer, Simon and Garfunkel).
@Lynne. if only there were more houses, then the waiting list might be less than 6 months long.......
Don't have a problem with more social housing being provided. It's needed. I have a problem with the fact that presently much of it is only provided via developers being told that they have to provide some if they wish to build open market housing (which may or may not be needed).
And the social housing problem in the 80s was aggrevated, then as now, by the Right to Buy legislation..........
Now......if someone were to start a thread about the unemployed being urged to get on their metaphorical bikes in order to look for work I've another "when I worked in social housing" anecdote that I could tell.
