Years ago folk used to fish there at night and access was via the railway tunnel, and there was a time when you could pay to use the footpath to access the cove.

When I worked for Hiremasters we used to deal with Network Rail, and the access to the beach via the shell cove house site we understood was controlled by the said Network rail. Not once did anyone on the House site question our parking of delivery lorries in the grounds or the Network Rail staff that used to come and collect the equipment from us via the wooden walk way.

Network Rail are only trying to pull the wool over the publics eyes by asking local and district councils for planning consent. They dont need it, its just a publicity exercise. They are financed and planning approved by national government they can basically do what they want with Dawlish station and the sea wall and this right dosent just apply to Dawlish. It doesn't matter if local planning says NO. This project is backed by the government and if it goes all the way to appeal to the top for a decision to go forward. You can bet your bottom dollar it will be built. Slowly the people of the UK are realising their freedoms and rights are being severely eroded just like our coast line.

But the footpath through that land has been Closed for a long time and it begs the question why? Did the town council agree to the closure of the footpath? Were the necessary notices advertised? I don't ever remember seeing notice of closure to the footpath.

Well said Fred and Deedoodle, you really do both speak the truth about all this. It really is now all about control and it is damm scary!

The project for that end of the sea wall is completely over the top! They are creating a concrete jungle which will destroy the look and ambience of the whole area. The stretch of sea wall that went down in 2014 has been rebuilt and is resiliant and they don't really need to do much more. But, having been given a zillion pound budget from Goverment, of course they will spend it on needless ...

Just checked. Wording now says 'private access to a secluded sandy beach".
