Brixham Coastguards dealt with three hoax calls yesterday, which tied up valuable resources which could have been needed for real emergencies. Three beaches in south Devon have reopened after being shut to bathers because of a sewage leak. Water at Dawlish beach, Coryton Cove and Boat Cove was affected after about 700 cubic metres of sewage leaked from a South West Water pumping station. The beaches were given the all-clear after samples assessed by the Environment Agency showed water met European bathing standards.

Five teenagers had to be rescued when they were stranded on a beach near Exmouth yesterday. The youngsters, who were said to be from Exeter, Exminster and Dawlish, were cut off by the tide on Sandy Bay. They were rescued unhurt by Exmouth Coastguard and given safety advice.

Dawlish United under-12s (pictured) successfully defended their title at a tournament at Newton St Cyres. After winning their group, Dawlish turned in their most impressive performance of the day as they beat Crediton A 7-0 in the quarter-finals.
