@willosindawlish I am not clear what it is that you are saying. I know that this is a low crime area - that is the point. In the late Sixties I lived in Liverpool 8 (Toxteth) and, even then, the police patrolled only in armoured land rovers like an occupying army. Subsequently, I was in London for many years. When I moved to Teignmouth, I couldn't believe that the flashing blue lights were ...

There could be new road signs - "Dawlish Welcomes Careful Doggers" and the Town Council could issue dogging licences.

@Lynne , Becoming a grumpy old person, easy though it may be for people who have always been miserable, does take some practice. Try these exercises: Moan about young people having no respect or discipline. Avoid listening to what other people actually say and respond to what you know people like that normally say. Try to include "immature" or "right-thinking people" whenever someone ...

The centaurs came over on the first exchange visit and, because they simply stayed behind, are classed as illegal immigrants. Apart from being the declared target of various "crack-downs" and "purges" they have lived contentedly in Totnes ever since. According to Inspector Calls, the crack-downs are always announced in advance in the Herald Express to make sure no-one is actually caught and thus ...

The good news is that they have now been arrested. The child was initially charged with theft and possession of an offensive weapon ( a brick, LEGO, but the law is the law.) The mother was charged with conpiracy to be a nuisance and the pair were served with a Dispersal Order. All the charges have been dropped now that it has emerged that they are a fine upstanding family and pay tax at the ...

Most police forces reject the idea of no-go areas. However, I can report that a new Devon and Cornwall Police strategy recommends that there should be two in South Devon. The first is Dawlish where the police now believe that the devil should look after his own. Attempts to infiltrate the town by plain clothes officers masquerading as drug addicts and alcoholics have proved unsuccessful because ...

My source within the constabulary, an Inspector Calls, informs me that a helicopter has been deployed to Teignmouth to apprehend a small child suspected of stealing a Kit Kat from the Coop. The child is described as, "about two years old and in a push chair accompanied by a woman, possibly on benefits." (Grow up, Don - editor.) Sorry, ed. You have to give me some licence. I'm only 62.

Beautiful, indeed.

There is a scheme whereby those on benefits can undertake voluntary work. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/HomeAndCommunity/Gettinginvolvedinyourcommunity/Volunteering/DG_064299 In order to take part people must continue to meet the criteria for the benefit, so jobseekers must continue to seek work and be available for interviews, Jobcentre reviews, etc. The other day, my old adversary, Sir Snouts ...
