Tesco won't do anything until Teignbridge District Council have refused them planning permission. Which in all probability TDC will do. There is only the need for the one new supermarket. Seems Sainsbury have been given the go ahead to build their store at Shutterton Bridge by no less a person than the Secretary of State! As it was deemed that Dawlish needed only one new supermarket I wonder where that puts the Tesco application to build on Lady's Mile?

Forgot to say that Cllrs may not respond on anything to do with planning matters as they could be accused of predetermination which basically means that they could be accused of having made up their minds before considering the planning application officially at committee stage. Yes, I know it's a cop out BUT when big boys like Sainsbury and Tesco are in the playground you gotta play by the rules ...

They are bothering because they are bloody minded, that's why. They want to win the Dawlish prize and not let any other supermarket do so. And anyway, it may start off being a small Tescos but they will have plenty of room to expand won't they? Just you wait and see.

Perhaps the provision of allotments could be on the wish list of Dawlish Town Council to whichever supermarket ends up building here.

No, I suppose not. It just struck me that you made the posting for some reason other than just to ask the question. So to answer it. Yes people did know (there was a piece in the local paper and from that and other sources e-mails started to fly around). I guess about 50 people in the public gallery.

As far as I am aware MP doesn't think Dawlish should have a supermarket. He called meeting not for him to express his opinion but so that others could express theirs and that there could be exchanges of these opinions. I'd say about 150/200 there. I'd say 50/50 for/against supermarket. He is trying to get town wide poll done. Suggest you contact him direct for further info on his personal stance ...

Dawlish needs good PR to "talk it up". Hence Waitrose better than Sainsbury, Sainsbury better than Tesco, Tesco better than Somerfield, Somerfield better than Aldi & Lidl. Get the picture?

Suggest you ask Tesco and Sainsbury that very question. (That is of course if they turn up......... I am awaiting to see what excuse(s) both will find for bottling out of attending.)

Why don't you raise the issue with Sainsbury's when they do their consultation in Dawlish next week?

Just a reminder - the public meeting planned for this evening (Friday 11th Jan) at Dawlish Community College has been CANCELLED. It is hoped to reschedule it for sometime in February.

You didn't HAVE to go to Tesco's did you? If you had decided not to shop at Stoke's anymore then your nearest alternatives for fruit and veg would have been Teignmouth surely? 2 x co-ops there plus other greengrocers. (Oh, and by the by - I've bought fruit and veg from Tesco's before now and guess what.......?!)

And then there would be even more empty properties along the Strand and Brunswick to join the Old Post Office. And I thought Dawlish town centre was up for regeneration!

Maybe, but - a large supermarket will exacerbate the cause(s) of local shops closing down
