General Discussion

The world does not stand still does it? I bet some people bemoaned the coming of the railways 150 odd years ago. Others saw it as progress.

It isn't snobbery - it's survival. And Dawlish doesn't have to become the same as everywhere else. If done carefully it can change its image but stay unique. And I think you are swimming against the tide if you want it to stay the same, credit crunch or no credit crunch.

Unfortunately Doreen, cheap and cheerful is what is leading to its demise. It has to be regenerated, aimed at a more upmarket audience, else it will die.

Definitely close down that amusement arcade - you can regenerate the town as much as you like but until that *!*!*!* amusement arcade is no more it will all be pretty pointless. (and no, it shouldn't be replaced by a bingo hall!). What do Bailey's do, or rather not do, to so upset you?

Yes, I agree The Strand would give it much more publicity by the mere fact that so many more people go there than Park Road. And yes, I think it is very nice. What Dawlish needs. A movement up-market. Although looking at other strands on Backyard I suspect it will be attacked just like Number One Cafe for being pretentious or some such nonsense.

Nice to see two new shops opened up in town 1. Moose - next door to Dawlish Trader in Brunswick Place. Sells 'young surfer' type gear. 2. DawlishBlue - 4 Park Road (between Gazette offices and Bob's Bike shop). Photo gallery. www.anthonytsteel.co.uk Go and take a look.

Can't believe it! Again a lot of me agrees with Bob. If Dawlish doesn't go upmarket it is only going to go one way and that is down. And that most certainly won't help the local wage economy.

Never thought I'd say this, but there's a lot that Bob says above that I agree with.

I almost posted this on the Dawlish is Going Downhill thread and then thought better of it. Can someone tell me why there seems this seemingly constant whinge about Dawlish from some of its residents? What do you want? A city like Exeter? Well, you're not going to get it. If you want a city lifestyle it follows that you need to live in the city. If you don't like it here there are two things it ...

You might want to take a look at the plans for Dawlish as being proposed by Yellow Book - the consultants employed by Dawlish Community Trust to come up with ideas as to how Dawlish could be regenerated. For a copy contact the the Town Council - email: townclerk@dawlish.gov.uk Totally agree that Dawlish could so easily be a year round attraction - railway, walks, birdwatching. Fling in some art ...
