I like the idea for changing the flowthrough of traffic. But it seems thats how it used to be 10 years ago.

I agree, looks good, the pavements in town are not wide enough for wheelchairs, prams etc. Would be very helpful if cars didn't park that side of the road, or even better make it completly pedestrianised - and have more markets etc in the town

The parking of cars should be abolished along the Strand at peak times and during the summer season. Allocate a few places for disabled only.
Widen pavement and make Strand wide enough for one lane only.Install speed humps aswell. There is a good car park at Barton Terrace.
Make the abled bodied walk from here.
During the summer it is too busy along the Strand with tourists and cars.

There's little wrong with Dawlish that a good lick of paint couldn't resolve. Look at what they've done up the road in Teignmouth for inspiration!

Other than that, closing down a couple of the tacky kiss-me-quick shops and that bloody amusement arcade that makes the place look like a cheap version of Blackpool, would help a lot. Oh, and forcing Baileys to meet national hygiene regulations would also be a step in the right direction.

Last but not least, a pigeon cull should also form part of the Action Plan.

Definitely close down that amusement arcade - you can regenerate the town as much as you like but until that *!*!*!* amusement arcade is no more it will all be pretty pointless. (and no, it shouldn't be replaced by a bingo hall!).

What do Bailey's do, or rather not do, to so upset you?

Make the Strand car free ..would be lovely.

I wouldn't eat in that place, no matter how they attempt to dress it up. They might have some new tables and chairs, but their hygiene standards seem atrocious to me.

Is Mr Bailey being attacked because he doesn't run with the clan? I get the feeling there are a lot of snobs in Dawlish who are forgetting the cheap holiday roots of their town. Dawlish would not survive if it only had gastro pubs and street cafes like France. Besides....us Brits are not as sophisticated as Europeans when it comes to cafe culture. What next? Get rid of fish and chip shops altogether? If you want class Mr Deacon, then go and live in Monaco. Dawlish is a cheap and cheerful town and always will be.

Unfortunately Doreen, cheap and cheerful is what is leading to its demise.

It has to be regenerated, aimed at a more upmarket audience, else it will die.

Doreen
Doreen
04 Jul 2008 15:01

That's just snobbery. Every resort ends up being the same, just like the uniform shopping centres we now have. Why does everything have to be upmarket? Is that just another excuse for those that are obsessed by making money, to make some more? Anyway, with the present credit crisis we have maybe somewhere that is cheap and cheerful is what people want.

04 Jul 2008 15:29

It isn't snobbery - it's survival. And Dawlish doesn't have to become the same as everywhere else. If done carefully it can change its image but stay unique.

And I think you are swimming against the tide if you want it to stay the same, credit crunch or no credit crunch.

Why do people who want change always get their way? What is so wrong with tradition? I'm glad i'm not young, as this world is obsessed with constant change and shallow things like celebrity. Very few people these days seem to have any depth. We are going nowhere fast.

The world does not stand still does it? I bet some people bemoaned the coming of the railways 150 odd years ago. Others saw it as progress.

04 Jul 2008 16:21

if the world doesnt stand still then why are we stopping nature from reclaiming the coastal railway line? surely progress would be an improved high-speed line away from this erosion.

You leave my railway line alone! It's got years left in it.

Roy

Long live Brunel's great work! But there is a part of me that would love to see the look on smug Protheroe's face if the railway line became unrepairable. The moment this capitalist machine of a family can't make money out of Dawlish then you won't see their backsides for dust.

Here's hoping the credit-crunch swallows them whole!

I remember having a fry-up in Baileys one morning. The cutlery was filthy, the mug of tea had lipstick on it and when the young lad went to pour another he couldn't find a clean mug.
The floor was filthy and the tables had a sheen of grease on them. The problem seemed to be that the staff were all young(cheap)and didn't give a dam about clenliness.I must admit this was 2 years ago so it could have improved.

As above read Mount Pleasant Inn. The greasiest cafe but with a wine list. Shit food with exorbitant prices!

04 Jul 2008 19:11

I agree with that, i also ate their once, decent helpings but dirty tables and everything was with chips. I like the Terrace , great mash and good slices of beef.
Owner seems a nice bloke as well.

04 Jul 2008 19:21

The owner and his son are far from nice. They use the fathers position on the council plus their pub to line their pockets of Dawlish money. They are corrupt as corrupt can be!

DO NOT TRUST THE PROTHEROES!

MONEY IS ALL THEY SEEK!

04 Jul 2008 19:23

I didn't know the Protheroes owned the Terrace Cafe in Dawlish.

04 Jul 2008 19:29

They own The Mount Pleasant Inn in Dawlish Warren. The most over-priced, greasy, fat-busting, cafe/pub in Devon. Better check the mortgage before you order a drink! The people who eat and drink there tend to think they are better than others....but the truth is they are plebs who crave to be higher in the evolutionary scale.

FOR PLEBS BY PLEBS!

Blimey. It seems that someone on here has had an overnight gender re-alignment (FAO Roy, that means a "sex change").

"Doreen", why did you decide to politicise (and therefore completely spoil) this interesting thread?

Standards of hygiene have got nothing to do with politics!

Poor standards of hygiene together with slovenly customer service are two key factors that mean that people will not return to our town and instead spend their money elsewhere. Dare I say, farther up the coast...

Don't forget....it wasn't so long ago that Dawlish Warren beach was infected with Ecoli. HOW ARE THE COUNCILLORS GOING TO HIDE THAT?

05 Jul 2008 12:16

Why does everyone resort to nastiness on here, accusing people like me of being another person? I should not be attacked for expressing my views, be they about my town or the council. I do not like many of our councillors and what they do, but this does not give Mr Deacon and others the right to attack me. After all, we live in a free country.

Roy
Roy
05 Jul 2008 12:51

Don't worry about it Doreen....they only attack you as they have something to hide. When people try to hide, or expose the truth, things can get a little heated. They have threatened me and others on numerous occasions, some of those threats involving internet address claims. If this is the case, then this is illegal and hacking in to computers carries a long prison sentence.

The likes of Joey Deacon (or whatever he calls himself) try to portray those that speak against the council as nasty or irrational, when all we wish to see is the truth of how our council really operates. Enjoy your weekend. Roy
