This was in Saturday's Express & Echo: Tesco's planning battle with rival store continues TESCO says it has not given up the fight to build a store in Dawlish. The supermarket giant hasbeen embroiled in a battle with Sainsbury's over permission to build a store in the town for more than three years. In March, Teignbridge Council gave Sainsbury's permission to build a store and petrol station at ...
The planning decision notice doesn't appear to have been issued yet stating why Sainsbury's were given planning permission. Until that is issued I don't think anything can happen and you can bet you life that the lawyers of a certain other supermarket will take a very good look at the reasons given. If there is any chance of another legal challenge being made I don't doubt it will all end up in ...

Have just received this via e-mail from the Planning Inspectorate Town and Country Planning Act 1990 Appeal by Tesco Stores Limited Site at Ladys Mile Holiday Park, Exeter Road, Dawlish, EX7 0LX I am writing to advise you that the inquiry arranged for Tuesday, 11 May 2010 has been cancelled because the appellant’s have requested that the appeal is placed on hold pending the issuing of a Council ...
At a supermarket BUT I do my odds and ends shop at local stores. If I stop using the local stores for odds and ends and go to the new supermarket and other people do likewise then that will work out to be a lot of custom the local shops will lose. Then there is the tourist custom to consider. Instead of doing their supermarket shop at Gerald's supermarket at the Warren and getting their bread from ...
Totally agree with you Mark and the other shops that will no doubt end up closing will be the ones at the Warren and the ones by Marine Garage. And Marine Garage will probably end up closing as well as Sainsbury intend building a filling station. Wonder whose bright idea it was that Dawlish should have a new supermarket?
I was in the public gallery when the debate and subsequent vote took place concerning whether it should be Tesco at Lady's Mile or Sainsbury at Shutterton Bridge. For info here are some of the arguments that I heard. 1. Although the Lady's Mile site is nearer the town centre, both that site and the site at Shutterton Bridge are 'out of town' sites in planning policy terms and thus one does not ...
Thought I'd start a new thread specifically concerning Tesco's Appeal. For info: the Grounds of Appeal are: 1. That Lady's Mile Holiday Park is the most appropriate location in planning policy terms. and 2. Since Tesco's original planning application was refused planning permission has been granted "for the provision of compensatory holiday accommodation". I've put that last bit in inverted commas ...
Tesco already have an Appeal lodged with regard to their being refused planning permission first time around. This Appeal is scheduled to be heard over 4 days or so in May. Don't think we will end up with two supermarkets though as the need for a supermarket in Dawlish is very clearly for only the one, nor do I think this whole saga is about to come to an end. I think it will run for some time ...
