@Lynne - it amazes me that you can get so hot under the collar about people having, in your view, too much land, or too many cars or even too much money. and yet, you see nothing wrong in people having extra bedrooms and you defend their right to have the taxpayers of this country subsidising the additional room in their homes. total hypocrite aren't you!
The difference is that many homes down here were bought by people already resident in the UK full time. In some parts of London (various Boroughs have this problem, there is no "Borough of London", there are Boroughs that make up London) homes are being marketed abroad "off plan" before other parts of the developments are then marketed in the UK. This is inflating the prices that are paid and ...
I decided that the Lib Dems had lost any trust I might have had in them when they stopped the reduction in the number of MPs going through. So something that would have made each vote fairer at an election and would have reduced the amount of money we spend on MP salaries etc etc got rejected just because they were having a tantrum on not getting their own way on something else. Stupid, stupid, ...
It is about time we had a child benefit system that gave you a helping hand for the first child, a smaller helping hand for a second child and then NOTHING for any further children. It would save the country money and stop these abuses of the system by people who just seem to have more and more children because they get paid handsomely for doing so.
Surely it isn't just about speed, it is also about capacity. Having this extra route will enable them to increase capacity on ALL routes North/South. It is just as well that the Victorians weren't this nimbyish otherwise we wouldn't have ANY railways, canals would have still been the major way of transporting freight and the wealth of this country would have been diminished because of it.
It's a harmless bit of fun and at least she got off the train and had a look around. Also, it doesn't hurt to know how others see us.
Well said Prime Minister, We'll have more of that please. The joy of Olympic and Jubilee years is that we are allowed to be proud of ourselves as a nation without being made to feel guilty over it. We need much more of that EVERY year. Last Night of the Proms coming up, get those singing voices ready.
Lynne the Americans have been spending a lot of time (as have others) creating warheads that create such a heat on impact and explosion that they destroy the chemicals in situ that they are being fired at to destroy. So it is highly unlikely that any chemical weapons would be realised into the atmosphere as a result of any bombing by the US. Having said that it isn't foolproof and my own opinion ...
@Carer - but he didn't do printing or developing which is what @Tracy mentions and as far as i'm aware he did give up the retail premises for various reasons, and it wasn't just about not selling enough photos
we watched the programme last night on Channel 4 and thought it was excellent. Very interesting to see how the system helped people in different ways back then. Hearbreakingly sad for the pensioner they showed, brilliant result for the chap in the wheelchair and VERY interesting to see how the lady on disability benefits with a list of things wrong with her as long as you arm behaved and reacted ...
