There's a huge tree in the grounds of Powderham, that I think is the beautiful perfect tree in the world. If you go down the road alongside the estuary you'll see it. I wanted to photograph it this time, but the light was wrong.

Yeah, I know, I read it. The Emperor knows.

Those school uniforms at Dawlish Comprehensive. White Polo shirts and grey, crimplene action slacks. Unflattering, not smart or dignified, makes the kids look retarded.

On my way home after 2 1/2 weeks in Dawlish. I spent most of the time watching Celebrity Big Brother videos, but on the occasions I ventured into town - apart from some tropical foliage around the Putting Green, the old place looked as good as ever. Not many places with a stream running through it and black swans. But - other places are moving forwards. Notably Teignmouth - which just looks ...

Anyone know any nice ones, preferably sea front-ish. Solarzoom !

When I used to live in Dawlish - the idea of being posted to Bideford or Barnstaple - it would have been like living at the end of the world. Now I do live at the end of the world, I haven't really modified that opinion. If it was cheap there, then yeah I would consider it. But its expensive too. Porlock is nice, so is Combe Martin, Lynmouth. There's another place....is it Dulverton? Dunster? ...

I'm not a great fan of Exeter either. St James, Heavitree.....its all tat. Druggies round the bus station. Though there is something underpinning prices - i.e an economy. University towns always have a good vibe. Salcombe is 400 k for a flat ! The reason its pricey is...yachies. Ditto for Dartmouth (not sure about Topsham - but it has a nice harbour). > Ok Shaldon could be a good bet - its ...

Look at some of the architecture. I daresay the best days of these places was 200 years ago ! Must have been smart then. Dawlish = Teignmouth = Exmouth = Newton Abbot Torquay and Paignton - both tatty now. Salcombe, Dartmouth and Topsham are chic, but look at the prices there - yikes.....especially Salcombe.

I daresay this is probably the sole survivor in Dawlish hotels. A lot of my childhood was spent hanging upside down in one of their fisherman's nets suspended between two trees.
