Unfortunately Lynne while we might not like the tax arrangements of companies like Amazon, the fact is that they haven't actually broken any laws by doing what they are doing.  These tax laws allowing money to be transferred across borders was originally done to stop companies having to be double taxed if they trade in more than one country.  What they didn't think through was clever tax lawyers ...

yes Brazilnut, you clearly have been brainwashed.  Brainwashed into thinking that this life is all about something for nothing.  You may be happy to live that way, plenty of others aren't and THEY are rebelling at having to pay for the lifestyles of those who won't do anything to help themselves.

I always understood it to be from Dark Water, same as Dublin

Pink house
30 Jul 2013

I remember seeing one of the houses on the back beach at Teignmouth being repainted a very bright pink and was a bit taken aback by how bright it was - but within a few months it had faded in the sun to a very pleasant colour.  So she should wait out her 3 years and see what colour it is then!

Brazilnut, I cannot believe you are comparing a small reduction in money given to people by the Govt, to the actions of someone like Hitler I have just watched a report on BBC News interviewing someone who was part of the action to take the Govt to court over this.  Her reason for needing a spare bedroom?  She needs a different mattress on her bed and a different bed to her husband - so ...

Benefit Cap

I agree with Mcjrpc - the cost of living in London is not necessarily any higher than anywhere else, except housing costs.  That is why so many people who grew up in London or the suburbs have had to move out to areas they CAN afford.  I've said it before and I will say it again - people who are not claiming benefits but are paying their own way cannot live just anywhere, they are limited to what ...

Derelict House

It is a shame that it has been left derelict for so long - as you say it is in a prime location.  Maybe the owners ran out of funds or couldn't get funding for a rebuild.

The Wall
18 Jun 2013

@leatash using an alternative route is of course what a lot of people did, ourselves included on a lot of occasions, how bizarre of you to suggest that anyone would deliberately sit in a queue of traffic because they had to see what was going on with the wall.  but sometimes using that part of town was unavoidable and the queues caused in both directions were a hassle for access even if you ...

Well how lucky for you that it didn't personally cause you any problems. For those of us that it DID affect, for numerous reasons, we are very glad it has now been cleared. For the time being at least.

Salamis Restaurant

I think the traders of the town would be far better off and the town itself would be far better off if the concentration was on serving the residents of the town who are here 12 months of the year rather than visitors who are here for a few days or weeks.  Independent shops are great for a town and can help provide a healthy mix of different items for sale on the high street and the surrounding ...
