I agree with "oblivious". For example, look at Newton Abbot. A slightly bigger town, I admit, but it has Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury all within a reasonably short distance from each other. The supermarkets don't care if they're near any real big competiton, as long as they're making money, they don't care, and that is the reality.
