Well I have heard from a very reliable source that Sainsburys have negotiated with Millwood Homes for a site past Exeter Road on the Shutterton Bridge side of Dawlish for a store. This is great news, because it means Sandy Lane will remain untouched if it happens. Dawlish certainly doensnt need 2 supermarkets within such a small distance from each other. Apparently, there will be a public consultation meeting being held regarding this proposal at the Manor House on 1st and 2nd February 2008. Watch this space! What do you think??

To slightly correct the above posting concerning the location. I understand the land concerned is immediately on the Exeter side of Shutterton Bridge.

So....Shutterton area somewhere then?

(At least it's not at or on Sandy Lane.)

What makes you think Tesco's will just give up if Sainsbury's come to Dawlish?

Smaller towns than this one have more than one supermarket

As it happens I don't think Tescos will just give up if Sainsbury's try to come here. I just think it might make it more difficult for them to build on me. If they want to go somewhere else and build I don't really care. I quite simply don't want them (or any other supermarket) on or near Sandy Lane playing fields.

"Our MP Says"

MP for Teignbridge, Richard Younger-Ross, questions the need for any supermarket development and is against the idea of developing the Sandy Lane recreation area and playing fields. This is why he’s called a public meeting for early January

PUBLIC MEETING - ALL WELCOME

Friday 11th January 2008

between 6pm and 8:30pm,

at Dawlish Community College. (Elm Grove Road)
What people need to take on board is this: Is there a want or is there a need for any supermarket in Dawlish? Convenience is not always the best solution. If we did have one, would it affect everyones quality of life (or does that not concern some?) Would the flow of traffic be adversly affected? after all, there needs to be a large number of service vehicles to keep the shelves topped up, there will be a huge increase in other forms of traffic, take a look at what is happening in Kingstiegnton and Exeter. There appears to be an unsatiable appetite to cock things up, let the developers run with the profits and leave the rest to sort out the problems. When will it stop?

Get real. Its a bloody supermarket. We do all the work & they make the money. Visit Sainsbury's in Torquay & Newton Abbot - Nothing up market about them !

Beem to the Mamor .. it all looks ok to me, mamy miserable faces, so I assume those that went dont want Sainsburys. I realise Sandy Lane residents dont want a supermarket there coz its on their doorstep but it would be nearer town.
What if you were told it would put your house price value up lol.

I agree with "oblivious". For example, look at Newton Abbot. A slightly bigger town, I admit, but it has Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury all within a reasonably short distance from each other. The supermarkets don't care if they're near any real big competiton, as long as they're making money, they don't care, and that is the reality.

what a lot of time an energy spent on the issue of a supermarket Of course we need a decent supermarket. Wonder if another Estate Agents or bookies were to open would it be met with the same furore. Roll on the Barton Bros opening another buisiness then at least the supermarket issue wouldnt still be taking over this forum as it is now. Its not as though its a matter of life or death

That the supermarket is getting a lot of attention shows exactly what an issue it is. Better that than complete and utter indifference.

Whilst I suspect that the opening of a 3rd betting shop might also cause quite a few comments its presence in the town would have nowhere near the impact that a large supermarket will have - for better or worse.

Dawlish needs a supermarket unless you want to carry on paying co op prices I go to Asda every fortnight have tried to buy the same things locally they havent got the variety and what they have got is much more expensive. A new supermarket would fill a need stop carbon printing fetch people into the area and bring employment that isnt seasonal. Yes its an important subject but it seems to have taken over the forum.

Yes, a supermarket will stop the trek to Newton or Exeter but it will also bring more cars to us here, in Dawlish. Swings and roundabouts if you ask me.

Money will go out of the local economy and into Mr Sainsbury's pockets. 1. From the tourists and 2. From those who live here.

Jobs? I have an open mind on how many and how well paid etc. However, let's see if we can guess where a lot of that money paid out in wages and salaries will end up? (Thinks)....Oh yes..........back into Mr Sainsbury's tills.

Someone wrote a book once called The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists. It keeps coming to my mind. I wonder why?
