Lynne, your hypothetical question poses an interesting point. I don't want our green spaces built on without proper planning considerations being made first. Here's another link worth looking at: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-chl/w-countryside_environment/w-planning-landing.htm
There's a free car park at the Co-op, and another free car park at Costcutter. They would still be there if the Strand was pedestrianised, as would the pay and display car park at the end of the Strand. All very close to shops. Dawlish residents are spoilt rotten when it comes to parking! They moan if they have to walk more than two feet from their cars to a shop. Bring on pedestrianisation I ...
Perhaps they could have made an exception but, unlike Sainsburys and the Co-op, Costcutter does not own its own bank. Small businesses have to pay a high charge to the credit card companies, which makes it uneconomic for them to accept cards for small transactions. Another example of the unfairness of Supermarkets!

Am I the only person in Dawlish who actually LIKES shopping in the Co-op? I was in there yesterday evening and got very good, cheerful service. And I find the staff helpful and chatty. Perhaps the attitude of the shopper makes a difference - if you expect bad attitudes that's what you get!
