Bet youll be first in the queue then Lynne. Or maybe AndyMac is already camping there ready to claim the £500 shopping voucher or a minimum wage job. Hope you bag some real bargins and are made to feel really welcome but remember a couple of things about how they treat their suppliers, staff and local competition. And also how you'll help their shareholders bonusses, but remember for every pound you spend in there not one penny more will go towards the town now they've got everything their way.

Guess what? I posted that just to see if you'd take the bait. The only thing that surprises me is that it too you two days to respond!

Nice one Lynne, but some of us have better things to do than sit grizzling on here all day. Like Andymac says the forum is just becoming an insults page only really came on to see if anytrhing was happening at the Sunburnt Arms, maybe you can bring us upto speed on that topic.

If I see a big notice board outside it (like those outside Sainsbury's) giving up to date info I'll be sure to let you know!

You mean the ones that break all the roadside advertising laws and require special planning consent which they dont actually have. The ones that Teignbridge planning department wont take action against because they say they will be removed when the store opens. We will see

I shop locally almost every day and haven't spoken to anyone who isn't looking forward to having a local Sainsburys, long overdue. I also know several people who are very happy to have a local job again, especially students who find it almost impossible to get any local part-time jobs other than seasonal work.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating, let's just wait and see how busy they are, if Sainsburys are empty then the moaners can say I told you so.

I hope Sainsburys do well, its a tall order in a town that thrives on doom and gloom, virtually every town in the country survives with a big supermarket, I really dont see why Dawlish should not have one and you know what ...it is not the end of the world!

You're quite right 'wondering', Sainsburys will do very well, it isn't a Dawlish store, people I know from Bishopsteignton to Exminster are looking forward to going to a Sainsburys without travelling to Exeter or Torquay, it will draw a lot of customers from the whole area.

Being able to go to a major supermarket without the traffic of Torquay or Exeter is the major attraction of this new Sainsburys. I think it is going to be a very busy store.

So why the downer on Tesco and not Sainsbury?

From my point of view it is all to do with location. Shutterton bridge okay, Lady's Mile (or Sandy Lane Playing Fields previous to that) not okay. Don't, or didn't, care about which brand of supermarket. However...........

Previous to Tesco's planning app. to build at Sandy Lane and their arrogant attitude towards those of us who objected to it, I didn't have any particular feelings for or against any particular brand of supermarket. Since that time however (circa 2007) I have never shopped in a Tesco supermarket.

Im all for the new sainsburys, looks great , made an improvement to that part of dawlish , so much easier to be able to go to a major supermarket whithout having to travel to exe or newton , no traffic.

So much easier to drive and park for free with a garenteed parking space, and also being able to buy a bigger variety of stuff rather then going to expensive and limited variety CO-OP. And the fuel will be cheaper.

cheaper then texaco, marine stores

Saw in the news that Tesco is ditching the Council run recycling banks on its sites in Teignbridge and planning to run its own. This reduces income to the Council which is used for other sustainability activities. Could this be revenge for planning permission being refused? Tesco apparently claim it's a change their adopting nationally.

Hi Lynne how about a little bet. Which one of the usual moaners on here is going to be the first to complain about how expensive Sainsbury's is.

From what I can see they dont appear to be that cheap and I think some humble pie may have to be eaten on here

Deisel 139.9 = 2p dearer than Tesco Teignmouth and only 1p cheaper than Marine.

Now 1p more for a far better quality product and better service plus supporting local trade and not some London based shareholding fat cats seems a fair price to pay to me.

The groceries will certainly be cheaper than either the Co-op or Costcutters! Ordinarily I would agree that a supermarket wouldn't be good for a town centre. However, in Dawlish town centre all you can buy is fudge and ice-cream, so I don't think there's any threat.

Sadly Dawlish today is geared almost exclusively towards holidaymakers, and this is reflected by the type of shops we have.

When the prices for the fuel first came on at sainsburys the other day the diesel was 1.36 a litre ,. so if those numbers what you have said are right then they are obviously not going to majorly undercut marine stores, but you can still get a further 10 pence off a litre when spending over 60 pound in the store, but fuel is fuel it aint no different coming from any other garage unless you get ie the super unleaded cuz the cant exactly `water it down`!!

@Myrtle "In Dawlish town centre all you can buy is fudge and ice-cream". That isn't quite true, is it? On The Strand there is the Co-op, a butcher's, a green-grocer's, a couple of bakers, a shoe-shop, a florist, a toy-shop come bits and bobs shop, Boots, LLoyds, One-Stop (with post office). Apologies if I've left any others out. Will they be negatively affected by the out of town supermarket? Well, I'd be greatly surprised if they aren't. So what you say might be true of the future but isn't true right now.

@MugOnHead: don't doubt for one moment that some people will complain. in fact my partner who had no idea i was writing this has just said to me "i wonder how long it will be before people in dawlish complain about the prices at the new supermarket?" i promise you that's exactly what has just happened. well, i guess as teignmouth isn't so far away that people can always vote with their feet and go there and even more so when the new morrison's opens. but bottom line is......sainsbury's is here and wef today dawlish has a new kid in town.

Okay, I'll fess up. I couldn't resist it. I did go along to S'bury's late this morning. Lovely day so decided to take a walk.

Visons of the Co-op - there were queues at the checkouts! Though to be fair that's because they were very busy.

Tell you what though - the town centre shops won't know what's hit 'em. Which means that getting the future of The Strand (to pedestrianise or not to pedestrianise that is the question) and the Lawn and the Brook even more right because something has got to draw people into the town.

@memoryman. unfortunately having been around the fuel supply business with a leading distributor. supermarket fuel is exactly as you describe it. i.e watered down. not however with water but with additives which normally comprise of detergent and octane booster. yes petrol is petrol but only as far as the big storage and distribution depots as plymouth and avonmouth. its when the tankers fill up at these depots that the different blends of additives are mixed in depending on which recipe the retail brand requires. branded fuel like bp, shell, texaco etc contain less additive and on the percentage octane scale are far better quality than supermarket fuel which is normally at the bottom of the percentage scale.

What this means in reality is by running on cheap supermarket fuel continually you will get less mileage, poorer performance, your engine will run hotter internally which may effect head gasket performance, valve and piston life etc.

Hi Lynne glad you enjoyed your walk down the supermarket how did the prices weigh up in your opinion because all i've heard from locals this afternoon is how steep the prices seem for a supermarket. My guess is they will lower prices but not until the holiday season ends in September.

I've no idea about the prices as I didn't buy anything. Will be able to make a comparison when we do our 'big shop' later today.

How many locals did you hear from? Were you outside the doing a survey?

i didnt know that mr mugonhead sounds like you know what your talking about but ive been filling up from tesco for years , but havent noticed any difference . Also i dont some shopping there yesterday and it was a lttle steep in price and also its smaller then i imagined with only 5 checkouts i think, the isle`s are narrow and there are only half of 2 isle`s for freezer bits ............

Sainsburys have done an amazing job with the space, spacious aisles and a good range of products in addition to food and a decent size carpark.
There will always be people who want more clothing, some people who want more fesh food, some people will complain there should be more fish and some people just like to complain, you will please some of the people all of the time and ....etc etc

They don't need to discount petrol, there is no local competition and I will carry on using Marine Garage as it is the same price. Sainsburys are discounting petrol by offering vouchers if you spend enough money, very good marketing.

Is supermarket petrol different, just Google appropriate words and you will find that discussion has been going ever since supermarkets sold petrol, it's an urban myth that supermarket petrol is made cheaper, many suppliers put different additives in their petrol but like every other product the buying power of a big customer gets a better price.

I also went there today, ok I suppose as any supermarket goes, nothing to shout about, swings and rounabouts on prices. Some things in there Coop dont sell simirlarly some things I wanted couldnt get, so I will stick to Coop with an occasional visit to Sainsburys
