@Lynne - at the bottom of your link is another link to a jrc report that makes interesting and thought provoking reading (albeit very draft in nature) . a line over bodmin moor to by-pass plymouth is not going to happen anytime this century though! The route gradient graphs are very interesting detail and nicely show how much of the SD line was built with 'non-mainline' gradients (1 in 40s) ...
@stephen15 - tavistock, lydford gorge, bridestowe are the relaid track (i.e. meldon-bere alston 20miles?). the point is, when 'the options' get presented in june, the oke-tavy option should be 'cost benefited' not just as a resiliance and diversionary benefit but also as a county business generator that helps not just north devon but South Devon as well . Hence, my numbers game of 78 journey ...

Not sure tidal energy would ever be a winner in this location given the range is only about 35% of that in the Bristol Channel.
Not sure if mentioned in dawlish.com so far, but one other national motivator for protecting the rail route is that the 'Global Crossing Cable' laid between the USA and London depends on this route as well. Supporting these at the main breach was apparently one of the most immediate jobs done.
And before anyone asks, Dubai doesn't always have calm seas!
@Lynne - sounds as though happily for dawish the 'sixth' option of breakwaters is being taken very seriously. @Clive - Then again estimates on erosion can vary considerably year to year, see link below on Sussex cliffs! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-26373624 You would probably need to look at records for this year in particular to see the worst that can happen in one year ...
