I wouldn't bother with Dawlish.....Teignmouth and Shaldon much more picturesque. Try Dartmmoor, Cornwall or North Devon. Dartmouth and surrounding area is very good also, but avoid Dawlish Warren....prices are aimed at gullible tourists and nothing there of any worth.

Don’t be put off by negative posts. Dawlish and Dawlish Warren have some lovely qualities. I live in Dawlish and often walk to Dawlish Warren along the coast path, as I did today. Dawlish Warren has a nature reserve that offer some interesting walks. It is un unspoilt part of the Warren and there is plenty of wildlife and bird watching going on there. They have some organised events for the summer holidays so it would be worth a visit to see what they have to offer.

It isn’t a long walk into Dawlish from the Warren and as you’ve probably seen from some of the pictures on this site it is a very pretty town. Plenty of pubs if you like a drink!! Beautiful cream teas from Gays creamery and the best selection of ice creams from Sticky Fingers ( my kids rave this shop).

There are a lot of places to visit on the outskirts of Dawlish too. If you want to go into Exeter City Centre, it’s great for shopping but also good for site seeing. Last year we took the children to the underground passages, it was a good day out. You also have the museum in Exeter and that’s free!!!
Exeter is only about 12 miles from Dawlish. Trago Mills is another must if you’ve not been before, that’s in Liverton, Newton Abbot (approx 7 miles from Dawlish) It has a massive shopping area all under one roof and then there is animals to see and a play park ( no admission fee!!!) Not far from Trago Mills there is The House of Marbles, this is another must to visit, you can watch them blowing the glass etc and they have some magnificent marble runs and a lovely café. Near to there is Stover Park another lovely walk.

I hope you really enjoy your stay

There is only one Viaduct, contrary what others think.

If you come to Dawlish/Dawlish Warren, don’t expect what others have told you are there.
They say, “Where has all the sand gone?” That should tell you summin. They put up blue flags, wait until it rains and watch the sea turn brown.
There are CCTV cameras all over the place watching your every move everybody is in fear of crime.
Some of us are told that it is time to book a taxi to the nut house. You don’t need to do that. If you come, you will be in it.
But if you do come, you may like to visit Powderham Castle, just a few miles away. They have been ostracised for not allowing certain types of marriage. It is such a deer old place!
If you visit the House of Marbles, make sure you don’t lose yours? Better if you visited Dawlish Museum and witnessed the EX Mares hats which were donated for some unknown reason.
If you go to Dartmoor, watch out for the pixies? They always to appear to be fishing and I haven’t yet worked out what for?
Exeter is going downhill fast, they will probably be glad to see a visitor.
Hope you enjoy your visit if you get that far? And have a safe journey home.

J3 is right about Exeter, it is a very interesting city with lots of history; the Cathedral is awe inspiring. It is also a very cultural city, should you be interested in the arts or subcultures.

There is a bird-watching boat trip up the river Exe.....enjoyable even if you're not a twitcher.

Sorry if you thought I was not being positive.
On the contrary. Think about, some people always give you the good side of life, I point people in the other direction.
What is a finacial advisor and what do they do?
They paint you a rosey picture and when things go wrong, they have gone and you end up blaming everybody but.
I recently heard a woman saying to her children, "don't spend anymore money in this grotty place, wait until we get to Torquay or Paignton.
Now that should tell you something.
What has Dawlish got that is so different from any where else, NOTHING!
You got shops, cafe's (too many) bookies, charity shops, Banks, estate agents, amusements, etc, etc. If that is different to what you have now, then come have a look by all means. If it is the same, why waste your money. Go somewhere else where you will really enjoy yourself.
I am not pointing my finger at you personally, I am pointing out some pitfalls.

Hi Jilly... just saw your message and had a quick look at some of the replies - poor you! I'm also going on holiday with my family to Dawlish on the 27th and am getting together some info about things to do when we're there..
My in-laws live in Higher Ashton - a very beautiful place and not too far away. We visited them a few weeks ago and did a quick reccy of Dawlish to check out our campsite (which we didn't actually find!) I agree with some of the comments that Dawlish Warren is set up for tourists.. rows of shops selling tat and not a great spot visually. HOWEVER the area itself is fantastic and if you're like us, you can use the place you're staying as a base and venture out from there. And of course if the weather is good it will make all the difference!!
I don't have time at the mo.. school run to do, however I will note some nice places for you to visit whilst you're there later this evening and would appreciate it if you have found any positive info for you to pass it on.. I have 3 boys 7 and under - do you have children? (so will you need to know about kiddie stuff)
Good luck in your mission!!
Best wishes
Sarah Gahces

Hi, alot of negative replies about Dawlish, take no notice - thousands of people go there every year and have a right good time. It's the ideal spot to get around the West Country. We go several times each year - two weeks in October next. In D.W. there's the holiday parks and just a few shops, Gerralds Supermarket, The Hot Bread Shop (for sandwiches, deli and fresh bread), Trawlers chippy, a chinese takeaway and an english takeaway. The beach is nice and there's the nature reserve. If you like a nice long walk then there's the sea wall, part of Brunels South Devon Railway, later to become art of the Great Western Raiway, that will take you into Dawlish - a delightful little town with Dawlish Water flowing through the centre with black swans, ducks and all manner of birds. There's some little gift shops' cafes and tea rooms but if you are hungry then look out for Gays Creamery on the left hand side of the stream as you walk away from the sea. Ice cream cones to die for, hot bacon butties, cherry slices, apple slices, chunks of mince beef and onion pie, clotted cream and lots more - just look in the window and drool! Then there's lots of places to visit in the area - Teignmouth, Torquay, Newton Abbot (market day Wed.), Totnes (with its castle), Plymouth (loads of shops, the Barbican and the Hoe) and Paignton. You can go to Paignton Harbour and take the ferry to Brixam or , from the town centre take the steam train to Kingswear and cross the river on the ferry to Dartmouth, a real nice day out. There are lots more places to visit too but this is just a taster. Enjoy you're stay, regards, Ron & Babs in N.W. England.

That's an awful lot of fatty food wizzbang! Sadly, this is the downfall of many of our towns.....stuck in the past with a junk food culture. A cream tea or fish and chips once in a while is fine, but a lot of people seem to gorge on deep-fried food, cakes and pastry's throughout their holiday! Maybe lack of choice is the problem? Use Dawlish as a base and seek out much healthier options. Totnes is great for healthy and tasty food, with recipes from all over the world. Or check out fresh fish cafes or restaurants, much healthier and better than the limited deep-fried 'heart-attack' food on offer here.

Better still, prepare a picnic. Much more fun, cheaper and doesn't tie you down to pub/cafe meal times. Happy hols!

Further to the subject of healthy food, people should be aware of the following.

On Radio 4's consumer programme 'You and Yours' (01/07/2008), it was stated that some catering establishments (pubs/restaurants/takeaways) may be using a blend of Vegetable oil which includes GM modified Corn oil. According to Trading Standards, if this is the case, these establishments should be displaying this information on their menu's and on prominent signs.

Keep your eyes peeled.

Yes Sarah, just what I thought. It's a holiday, have a few treats! I do agree with dullish about having a picnic though, we do that and take it to Cockwood Harbour or Starcross.

Seems to me Dullish and Viaduct expound the virtues of other towns so much maybe they should pack their bags and go and live there.

Hi there! I'm also holidaying in Dawlish this year, in August. This forum has been very helpful, thank you. Can anyone tell me if there somewhere that I could hire a bicycle for a day or two? And where it is if there is anywhere? Im quite keen to investigate Dartmoor. Would this be do-able on bikes or is there any public transport there... Any information on the sights/attraction/walks that is in biking distance from dawlish would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Try a Bike Shop in Dawlish called Braking Wind (honest), they can probably give you lots of help/advice with bike hire/cycle paths etc.

There is an enjoyable cycle ride from Powderham Church (Powderham castle & Estate), taking you along the River Exe and up to Turf Locks Hotel/Pub. Great fun!

Avoid Dawlish Warren...besides nature reserve, there is nothing there; apart from too many people crammed on the beach burning their skin.

Also try info below. Enjoy.

Cycling & Walking

The Historic Quayside is the ideal place for a relaxing walk or cycle ride. Take a stroll around the quay and stop for a drink in one of the many cafes and tearooms. Or why not hire a bike from Saddles and Paddles and head towards one of the two riverside pubs along the canal trail. There are bikes available for adults and children, as well as child seats for the under 5s.

The Exe Cycle Route runs for seven miles, and takes a flat, easy route along the River Exe and Ship Canal. Cycle through the Riverside Valley Park, Devon Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve, Exminster Marshes and RSPB Nature Reserve and look out for herons, kingfishers and dragonflies.
