I don't know how many of you are aware of the recent news of the modernisation consultation period which is in progress at present re: the possible closure of DawVale.
I would like to take a minute to explain why the closure of this establishment would be devestating for our community.
DawVale provides much needed residential care for those who even with a package of care are unable to remain in their own homes. Short stay and Respite care is also in place which enables carers and families much needed breaks from the very hard work of caring for a love one 24 hours a day, and also enables clients to have interaction with people which many elderly people living on their own do not receive. DawVale also has intermediate care beds which lets elderly people come in and regain their strength and confidence after an illness or fall, so they can safely return home independently.
Meals on wheels and a laundry service help many Dawlish residents cope with daily living tasks.
DawVale also sports a Day Centre which is popular with many local residents, this again enables them to make friends and have a hot meal and a bath if they wish. For some people this is the only time they see others
Devon county Councils proposals are not excepable. Modernisation would enable DawVale to provide an even better service than it already does, but Closure would have a massive effect on the elderly population of Dawlish, by taking vital services away.
If anyone feels strongly about this please comment or send a letter to DawVale to support them in their fight to remain open.
Thank you

My Granny (the dowager Empress) was euthanized against her will in Dawlish.
Thats the real scandal, Dawlish doctors being liberal with the diamorphine.
If the population starts to drop in Dawvale, its the opiates at fault, not the stench of wee wee.
What ever happened to your granny is not the fault of DawVale, and has no relevance to the original message.
If you have a issues about the GPs you are commenting to the wrong message.
She was there before, and they looked after her okay.
They do give them a lot of meds though, hence why they all sit round in a circle in the Daw Vale front room, stoned and drooling.
The medication procedure is very strict, and the only medication that is given out is prescribed by the GPs, the staff are unable to give out any thing not prescribed to the clients personally. We are back to your issues with GPs I think !
I agree that Daw Vale should be saved. This issue has come up from time to time over the last few decades.
If it closed, then what does one do with all the residents? You can't have them roaming the streets.
So, we will know that closure is seriously likely when the death rates start going up there. I.e which signifies that the inmates are being put down.
That will be the watershed moment. Till then I think it is safe.
The closure of DawVale would cause many problems like you say, we cant have elderly people walking the streets, which looks like what will be happening if many more closures and cut backs continue.
The word "Inmate" and being "put down" alarm me slightly, but Iam sure these words were intended for an impact ?
The residents at Daw Vale are rightly concerned about their futures along with the staff and many other elderly people in the community which use DawVales services.
The other thing that people need to think about is what is going to happen to any of us if we need such services in the far away future???????
My apologies for the levity. The comments by SZ4 were extremely witty however, sorry I couldn't reach that level.
For what its worth I think you are entirely right. Daw Vale should not be closed. My sister used to visit OAPs there and I joined her once or twice, although I gave up when one of the old dears took a fancy to me.
