With environmental issues seemingly the hot topic at the moment, I feel the impending car tax hikes are an issue that many families have turned a blind eye to. An average family sized car ie mondeos, vectras etc will see a hike in car tax from the current £170 to a whopping £260. How on earth can this be justified. This government talks about hitting the gas guzzling 4x4's that hammer round the streets of London, but those people can probably afford the increases whatever they are. We are being hit left, right and centre with increases on every product and service we purchase. There is a large portion of society that drives around untaxed, uninsured and in unroadworthy vehicles until they are eventually stopped and given a token fine or ban which many will simply ignore. Governments have encouraged industrial centres and supermarkets to locate out of town and forced people to use cars much more than they used to, and now they are bludgeoning them again. How can this be justified?

Look at the wider picture?
What are the alternatives?
And how would you improve your/our quality of life in any other way?

Soon everyone will just move to spain ro somewhere like that as its a cheaper way of living.

This country is just getting worse and worse with hikes in everything.
Probably be best soon to go on benifits, earn more and get more back from them.

I saw petrol in exeter on friday upto £130.9 how bad is that.!!!!

Don't worry. When that marvellous "going to change Dawlish for the better" supermarket turns up everything will be for the better.

Not that I would want to live there.. but do people there dislike people moving in from the UK and taking over?, whereas some dont like people from abroad settling here.

That's because you allow those morons to run it!
Start by questioning and demanding transparency from your local councillors then work your way up to politicians. They are all corrupt in some form or other.....but if enough people put pressure on them then they crumble; showing the parasites that they are.

Perhaps then, our town will be even better!

ps-congrats to Exeter City! Next year Torquay United!

If your car is a 2000/2001 model or older I think the tax remains same. If newer than this, then yes, its up to the higher rate.

Wondering, I lived in spain for many years and they have excellent health care for free and the pensions for the elderly allows them to live very well. Also health insurance is reasonable and give brilliant service, my (who lived in spain for 40 yrs) Mother was in and out of hospital when on insurance and you get a private room and wonderful compassionate service.

One more thing on this.
Why has diesel fuel increased so much in the last few months.
About 6 years ago I ran a diesel Mondeo and diesel was the cheapest fuel.
Now it has far outstripped leaded and super unleaded.
Surely diesel is just a 'heavy oil' and the process to get it to the pumps cannot involve as much refining as both unleaded types?
Is it that demand is now just forcing the price per litre up?
Makes no sense.
Don't think recent increases are government related, more global related.
