Has anyone had any luck on E Bay, I have bought a few really good bargains and thought I would have a go at selling.
Got rid of a lot of stuff I didn't want, for what I thought ws a good price.
Then went to boot sales and charity shops, and again have been pleasantly surprised.
My last 2 buy and sell items are a Beatrix Potter money box cost 99p sold for £15 and a print bought for £3.49 sold for £47

is it true that the inland revenue are randomly monitoring sales on ebay to ensure that sellers are declaring their profits?

Yes but that is if you make a business out of it, selling new items

I've only just recently bought a few things on ebay and my son wanted to sell some nintendo DS games which he managed to get a good price for, you do have to pay an insertion fee and also a final value fee when the item sells but if he had taken them into a game shop he would probably only have got half the price. If you are selling your own used stuff then you wouldn't need to inform the Inland Rev but if you are buying at a boot sale etc and then selling on for a profit you would be liable to pay tax on the profit as this would then be classed as a small business. I love looking on ebay and it's great that people are reusing things rather than dumping at tips!
