On my way home after 2 1/2 weeks in Dawlish.
I spent most of the time watching Celebrity Big Brother videos, but on the occasions I ventured into town - apart from some tropical foliage around the Putting Green, the old place looked as good as ever. Not many places with a stream running through it and black swans.
But - other places are moving forwards. Notably Teignmouth - which just looks sensational now. Beautiful parkland walk down the hill, quaint alleyways, kids playground, cool museum. Surely now there's a future for the old RIviera, which is original Georgian architecture.
Back to Dawlish....
My buddy from New York turned up. Cornish Pasties and beer on Marine Parade, feed the ducks (old crone tried to stop us 'no white bread') and then a walk along the sea wall to Dawlish Warren, with more beer at Mount Pleasant, and an ascent of Langstone Rock.
Negatives -
...Dentists. No NHS treatment for kids - come on there's something wrong there.
...Charity Shops - which I think are a gauge of a town nowadays. Dawlish, your Charity Shops lack a certain je ne sais quoi.
...Cod and Chips, 4 quid - no way!
...Dog poop, ...didn't see any so be still you moaners.
..Somefield discount corner...not enough discounted goods and still too many ghosts roaming the aisles.
...Hotels....a lousy selection.
...Hospital. ...Dawlish, you have a great little hospital, but, when I went to the opening of their Saturday fete, the announcer said it was suffering. Support your hospital Dawlish, ...don't be twats.
Those school uniforms at Dawlish Comprehensive.
White Polo shirts and grey, crimplene action slacks.
Unflattering, not smart or dignified, makes the kids look retarded.
New garbage disposal requirements are just plain insanity.
Angry letters to local papers from eloquent dissenters hit the bullseye.
'Angry letters to local papers from eloquent dissenters hit the bullseye'
Thanks, that was me, one of them anyway.
But the Dawlish Post rarely features letters from Dawlish residents. Why?
On my last visit to the area I have to agree that, Teignbridge Council is it?, seems to spend most of it's money on Teignmouth, rather than Dawlish.
Teignmouth really looked immaculate in May, although Dawlish still has it's own unique charm, which in my opinion is unsurpassed.
Exmouth too, looked great, although I'm not sure if it is controlled by Teignbridge? Probably not.
Dawlish Station is a little run down though, which spoils it for the rest of the town. Apart from the station, I still think Dawlish looks good.
Went to catch a train at 230 this afternoon .. station is on a makeover. Painting outside the main entrance door and on the platform were sanding the seats for a repaint. If they do the bridge too that will be good.
My Mother, the Dowager Empress, had kept the newspaper letter to show me, as she has a bee in her bonnet about the new complicated procedure.
As soon as she showed it to me I laughed and said 'I know EXACTLY who has written that.'
...you don't get to be Emperor of the Universe, or a Sith Lord, without mystic ESP powers.
Or being able to read my name at the top of the letter!
Your powers of deduction are indeed spooky. You'll be telling me next you know all my IDs on this forum.
That was what the letter said.
Haven't you noticed the number of Wookies wandering around Somerfield lately, carrying shopping baskets
Hi
I used to go to Dawlish as a child and I was wondering what the name of the palce where we used to stay is called.
I know that there was a river ran along side (there were black swans), chalets were at front of the park and caravans at the back, there was swimming pool right at the entrance of the park and amusement arcade and entertainment lounge at the front also. one of the entertainers when we used to go was a man called Pip Critten. There was also a little shop, take-away shop and laundrette.
I would love to know what the place is like now and maybe pay another visit - an you help with ay info?
Thanks
Carol
