We visit Dawlish two or three times a year but usually for one or two nights at a time. This year we are staying for a week and would like advice on where to eat in the evening, don't think I will want to cook every night.
If you give us some idea of what type of food you are interested in and how much you'd be prepared to pay we might be able to help you.
answer to 'Cook your own'.
Ii is just simply 'impossible' for some people to be helpful/nice here..I'm glad I'm on the move soon.
For evening meals you may have to go out of town unless you like sport in pubs.
Do try The Witches Bowl some evenings, Brewery Bar or the Indian.
I think people are right to say that it is the niche market that Dawlish shops & restuarants needs to look at.
So, we have a deli, and a health food store. Why not a veggie restaurant which uses organic food sourced as locally as possible.
So far the replies have been pretty unhelpful. The answer depends a bit on your budget and you will have to look around the area. The Rodean restaurant in Kenton and the Owl and the Pussy Cat in Teignmouth offer fine menus; the Mount Pleasant Inn at Dawlish Warren does a reliable line in grills and pub meals (and is quite pleasant now that smoking is prohibited); the Indian restaurant in Park Road is good for Indian food and generous helpings; many people like the Dawlish Grill opposite the Co-oP in the Strand but they have unique opening times; the Michaelmas Goose in Teignmouth is good for wholesome snacks and light meals at lunch times. As you go towards Torquay it becomes more pretentious.
Perhaps you will find others and can post them here for us?
Thanks for the replies, I am sure we will find something to suit. We do enjoy indian, steaks and I like fish and will try some of the places mentioned. Will let you all know how it goes and if we find anywhere that has not been mentioned - only if its good of course.
You should try No 42 The Old Brewery. There is a bar menu and for a special meal the restaurant. The only place in Dawlish to get un-frozen food.
The Old Brewery is in High Street, that's the one that runs behind the Co-op.
Witches Bowl is nice and they open some evenings, the owners are really friendly.
Ugly Duckling is good value for money.
Smugglers Inn has excellent carveries, good bar meals and a good a la carte menu.
Boathouse at Dawlish Warren is cheapish but big portions.
Cream teas and soups and sandwiches - Old Mill Tearoom.
If you want something really special you'll have to travel outside of Dawlish sadly, can highly recommend Sampsons Farm and Cridford Inn. Both small menus with locally sourced and freshly prepared food - not cheap but for a special occasion worth the money.
Hope you enjoy your stay.
Have you tried the Witches Bowl?? Good food and just got a new evening menu.
Or there is always the Smugglers of course.
Just had great week in Dawlish and tried some of the places you advised. Witches Bowl was really nice, friendly people and food really good. Had a great meal at the Paradise Palace ( the best naan bread we have ever tasted) Very impressed with Carvery at the Smugglers - food was great and the service was excellent. We tried to get in at the Old Brewery but both nights we tried it was shut did manage to have a drink there just before we left but had already eaten that night. Staff were very pleasant and welcoming and we will try it when we return later in the year. We also tried the Railway early evening and the Marine Tavern and have to say we didn't have a bad meal anywhere. Thanks to everyone who suggested places we had a fantastic time.
