Yeah - shame isnt it - seems to be pretty typical response on this website now. Never mind - just dont complain if it happens and YOU dont happen to agree. Obviously too busy consuming copious amounts of alcohol!

Yes it is typical, but typical Dawlish .. had it been about the Sandy Lane site there would have been riots!
I will go see tomorrow, glad for the reminder.

There WERE almost riots about Tesco and the Sandy Lane site!

Beem to the Mamor .. it all looks ok to me, mamy miserable faces, so I assume those that went dont want Sainsburys. I realise Sandy Lane residents dont want a supermarket there coz its on their doorstep but it would be nearer town.

Sandy Lane might well be nearer town but would YOU want a car park up your backside? Well, okay the other side of your garden fence? Why should those in Exeter Road and Henty Avenue have that? (and no I don't live there and no that isn't the only reason Sandy Lane was and is a totally inappropriate site for a supermarket)

Well don't go on about having a supermarket at Sandy Lane then.

As I arrived at the Manor 'Friends of the earth' person handed out a leaftet against a supermarket. It mentions that a butchers shop and Veg shop have closed recently .. who were they then?
Had to laugh.. at the bottom of this page an advert today for 'Tesco' every little helps!

Did they mention in the leaflets that the butchers and the veg shop closed due to retirement? No, I bet they didn't!

PR people work on both sides of this issue don't they....

Don't they just word things to suit themselves. Politics!

The actual words are 'Dawlish has already lost two locally owned greengrocers fairly recemtly
along with a butcher and a fishmonger due to unfair supermarket 'competition'.

I am unable to make sense of that, where were they then?

The fishmongers was just past landsdowne pub closed about 10 years ago (there is one still thriving in Teignmouth) greengrocers no idea not in the 22 years i have lived here like it or hate it as i do this is the age of the supermarket its not a case of yes or no its who

I went; there wasn't much on display but what there was looked OK. The main point being that Dawlish needs a supermarket and this solution avoids getting bogged down in the whole Sandy Lane mess. Also it's just far enough out of town that the local shops wont be damaged. The rest of us can stop driving to Newton Abbot or wherever and can claim green credentials.
I think it's on a green-field site, but hardly an essential one if the rest of Shutterton is any guide.
Transport links from the town would have to be laid on for the older and disabled residents.
The biggest loser may turn out to be the Marine Garage as I notice that the plans include a petrol station.
As for Friends of the Earth, I am very sympathetic, but their leaflet asked us to disregard supermarket culture. Sorry, but that battle was lost 30 years ago; let's get on with providing Dawlish with a decent supermarket!

Thank you.
I remember now the greengrocer that was opposite the fish shop in Queen Street.
In fact as you may know veg in supermarkets can be expensive, it is where they make money because people just through in the trolly. I was in Asda week ago and got one jacket potato, on the receipt it said 39p lol . 26p in Stokes.

And there's nothing wrong with a petrol price war in Dawlish as Marine Garage prices are sky high and no doubt about to rocket even higher with the summer coming! Any thoughts?????????

If I was them I would close right NOW and leave Dawlish without fuel as Sainsburys will be selling it.
