Please be aware that here in Dawlish we are now all entitled to free heating, lighting, television and a read of the newspaper. All this is available from mid morning to late evening, Monday to Saturday, and mid morning to tea time on Sundays. If you, or if anyone you know are interested in this no catches, no strings offer, then please make your way to the betting shops on the strand. You may even be given a complementary cup of tea or coffee and an endless supply of pens and paper.
I will see you there

Hmmm. Interesting phenomenon Dawlish and betting shops. We have a very small shopping area and yet we have two within spitting distance of each other.

Any thoughts on why there appears to be enough custom to keep each in business?

Could it have something to do with the mentality of the people that support it? After all, they are not going to provide freebies without someone filling their coffers.

People dont see any wrong in spending big money in a pub. So put on a few bets you just may go home with more money in your pocket than had you been in the pub!
I go to neither betting shops and prefer online, but there is clearly a call for two outlets here.

yes, and also the great thing about these betting shops is that the casino machines they now have allow you to put your bank card into them, therefore saving you the trouble to carry around wads of cash. my pal emptied his bank account within 30 minutes in one of the betting shops a couple of weeks ago. dont think his missus was too happy, but i suppose the kids could always go without. not sure if the mortgage company could go without though.

I havent seen more than a dozen people at one time in either betting shop especially since the smoking ban of course the town needs one but 2!

i think that people lose their money so much quicker on the casino machines in there that they no longer hang around for the racing. hence the shop has less people in at one time, but the takings and profits are still on the increase. one machine could pay the wages of both attendants in just a couple of minutes of being played.
