I have read many positive and negative remarks on Dawlish but no-one comments on the level of public services. As a frequent visitor to Dawlish who lives in a rapidly expanding village with very few facilities, I am interested to know what people think of the public services in dawlish. Transport, refuse collection, entertainment, doctors, dentist. Are these services efficient or not, would be pleased to hear your views

Bus service is every 15 minutes all day to Exeter and Teignmouth. Hourly in the evening. Last bus from Exeter and Teignmouth is at 1135pm.
The GP surgery is OK but you have to get in early to get an appointment, thats the same anywhere. The Hospital is next door.
I dont know about the dentists here.
As for that comment about positive response. Probably the only thing wrong with Dawlish really is some of the small minded people.

On dentists - if you want an NHS one you have to go to Newton A. Bus service (85/85a) is very frequent BUT is expensive for those of us who still have to pay (something like £4.00 return fare Dawlish/Teignmouth). There is the rail station of course. Buy a Devon/Cornwall railcard, pick up a timetable and travel by train. Get a third off with rail card. Cheaper fares then the bus then become even cheaper. So.....with Devon/Cornwall railcard return fare Dawlish/Teignmouth is around the £1.50 mark. Return fare Dawlish/Exeter around £2.50.

Hi Penny, we moved to Dawlish not long ago, while Dentists are very difficult to find, Private or NHS, we found the Doctors surgery Barton, a totally differnt story, so easy and very helpful and within 2 weeks the whole family were registered and had check ups. I would also recommend Gatehouse School who we found very supportive and informative when placing our children.

REFUSE COLLECTION: We have 2 main bins (green and black) and 2 smaller tubs for our refuse. We have a rotation each week of the green and black bins, therefore each are collected fortnightly, the green bins are for food waste, garden waste and thin card and the black for landfill. The small green and black boxes are for other recycling e.g. milk bottles, glass bottles papers, tins etc.The only problem with this system is that in the summer the green bins are prone to maggots!! We recycle as much waste as possible and also have a recycling point at sandy land and the manor car park.

ENTERTAINMENT/LEISURE: There is a leisure centre in Dawlish, Tennis courts, golf course, indoor and outdoor bowling. We have our own small Shaftesbury theatre that puts on some excellent performances.

DOCTORS/DENTIST: There are no NHS dentist available in Dawlish now and most people have had to pay privately and join Denplan which is very expensive but this is a National problem and not local. If you need an appointment with the Doctor you have to ring for an appointment in the morning when it opens at 8.30am, this is a problem for parents if they have to take their children to school, by the time they come back the appointments have already been taken.

thank you everyone for your replies lots of information, transport seems good and had some good reports re doctors, leisure centre. With regard to refuse and dentists it seems to be similar everywhere. You have given me plenty to think about.
