We have so many people complaining on this site about people not shopping locally and how Dawlish traders are not happy that people go elsewhere (whichever town or supermarket) to do their shopping. I would like to say that personally, i do my bulk buying at Tescos, Asda wherever the cheapest prices are, ut i like to use our local shops for fresh meat, and veg. However our local veg shop (Stokes) has now lost my custom, due to the poor quality of produce they sell. 2 days ago i went there and brought potatoes, peppers, carrots, sweet potatoes and bananas, all looking great on the outside. On trying to use these products yesterday half of it had to be thrown away as it was rotten inside. I had therefore to go to Tescos to replace these items,as they had better quality produce than i could get in Dawlish. Also like many families, i cannot afford to waste my money on shoddy food! Needless to say , all i will buy locally now is my fresh meat which i must point out, our butcher is very helpfull and the meat is of the finest quality. So before we have all these do gooders moaning and making us supermarket shoppers out to be the demise of Dawlish, maybe some of the local shops should take a good look at their prices and quality of goods they want us to buy!
And a Farmers' Market in Dawlish could help out perhaps?
Alternatively, and until and unless that happens why don't you get your fruit and veg delivered by a local, organic, supplier?
Just before christmas i was in our co-op and witnessed a lady returning a joint she had purchased the day before, she asked to see the manager, he wasn't there so someone else came down from upstairs, the lady explained she had just opened it and the smell was awful which i witnessed.
The man in charge just took the meat from her without saying a word and walked off with it, i don't know the out come as i left the store.
I myself had a similar experience last summer when i returned something and no one knew how to fill a customer return form in and made me feel like i was being an inconvenience.
Have you been back to Stokes to give them a chance to see what they say? Maybe that would be better than to rubbish their name. Stokes surely has a reputation to keep where as with Tesco people soon forget.
I bought some satsumas in Iceland and after three days two were going off. They looked ok from outside.. but then that is the case with people too lol.
You could open a shop in Dawlish and show em how it should be done.
Nah.. close the lot down and make em into flats people would be happier with that.
I,m not rubbishing their name, just stating facts, and if it was just one item that was off, then fair enough maybe a mistake was made, but for every item apart from one being rotten or past using, i think fair comment has been made, it just means that personally i wouldnt shop there again because of the quality of food i was sold, and i would have the same attitude wherever i shopped, Superstore, Corner Shop etc. All i want is to get the best value for my money, as many others do!
Why did you not tell Stokes?
They may have actually been grateful to you for telling them and they could complain to their wholesaler. I know I would rather be told, having once had a shop, than people just go elsewhere... mind I wouldn't want to sell food!
Is very possible thry get stock from the same wholesaler as the local superstores anyway, so it was luck of the draw. Bad luck on Stokes but again the sort of story people like here.
Unfortunately, its a minority of people who like stories like this, and these people love to blow it all up out of proportion!! I was just pointing out my reason why I shop elsewhere, it could be anyone, in any town where you dont get satisfactory products.
You didn't HAVE to go to Tesco's did you? If you had decided not to shop at Stoke's anymore then your nearest alternatives for fruit and veg would have been Teignmouth surely? 2 x co-ops there plus other greengrocers.
(Oh, and by the by - I've bought fruit and veg from Tesco's before now and guess what.......?!)
The very people that complain about their lot are the very one’s that do nothing about it at source.
Why did you not go back to Stokes and point out what was wrong, you would have a very strong case.
Has anyone noticed that all (or nearly all) of their produce is labeled as 1st class, when in fact it would struggle to obtain a 3rd class standard, this is part of the rip off Britain culture. The difference in buying 1st and 3rd class produce is staggering, both to us as consumers and those that buy it to pass it up as food.
Others countries do not tolerate it, in fact most of the produce that we buy here has been rejected by others.
There is a very old saying, "I'm paying, so I'm saying".
If you let them get away with it, who can you blame?
From the edge of Dawlish where i live, it was actually quicker and more convenient to go to Tesco Exeter rather than drive to Teignmouth and try and find a parking space in Coops tiny car park.
All i am trying to point out is that everybody has their own reasons for shopping wherever they shop and they shouldnt be made out to be Judas,s for wanting or having to shop elsewhere than their local shops, but as usual on this site, it all get blown out of proportion.
You still will not say why you would not go back to Stokes to tell them?
You have been asked THREE times.
.. so perhaps its all about getting people to shop elsewhere. I bet Stokes is good enough if you want a raffle prize for a fund raising do.
Oh dear Wondering, you really seem to have an attitude problem....the reason i didnt go back was i had no reciept, so i,m sure they would have replaced my goods and taken my word for it..NOT! also what part of your brain seems to think i would want to go there for a raffle prize, what planet are you on! Do you think i am some kind of fund raiser or something? I really think you need to get a life, your imagination is running wild!
