What We Stand For

https://www.newtonabbotlibdems.org.uk/values

The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity.

Rosie Liberal Democrats

The Liberal Democrats stand firm on seven core values: liberty, equality, democracy, community, human rights, internationalism, and environmentalism. Each of these underpin the party's specific policy proposals.

The bird of liberty, projected onto a wall

Liberty

We believe in the right of individuals to make their own decisions about how they live their lives, as long as they do not cause harm to others.

Our aim is to empower and support individuals to pursue their dreams, to make the most of their talents and to live their lives as they wish.

Pride flag

Equality

We stand by the idea that without equality, true liberty cannot be realised.

This requires an active state to: ensure that no one is held back by poverty, poor health, or discrimination, including on the basis of personal characteristics or beliefs; provide access to education or training, and other public services, including a welfare safety net; and guarantee that everyone enjoys equality before the law.

A pen marking an X vote in a box

Democracy

We understand that through democracy, every citizen is empowered to make their voice heard, without being dominated by entrenched interests or the power of money; checks and balances, so that those in power cannot abuse their positions for personal gain or political advantage; and a plurality of views, where no individual or organisation is deterred from speaking truth to power.

Image of someone clapping

Community

We believe it is important to provide support for a diverse range of organisations that enable individuals to join together in the pursuit of common goals or activities; and the decentralisation of political and economic power to local government and the nations and regions of the UK.

Image of burning candle

Human Rights

Providing, defending and promoting equal legal rights for everyone to pursue their lives according to their abilities, wishes and means, with no discrimination on the basis of religion or belief, gender, sexuality, age, ethnicity, disability, or minority status in their country of birth or permanent residency is highly important to us.

International flags

Internationalism

We support a fairer and more equal, tolerant and connected world and collaboration with the UK's neighbours - including, ultimately, rejoining the EU - in guaranteeing peace and security, tackling the climate and nature emergencies, standing up to corporate power and spreading prosperity around the world.

Landscape with wind turbine

Environmentalism

We value the importance of acting at home and internationally to promote environmentally sustainable means of production and consumption and living in harmony with nature.

@burnside Which of the seven core values: liberty, equality, democracy, community, human rights, internationalism, and environmentalism, dissuade you from voting Liberal Democrat?

@Alipop

For starters:

Rejoining the EU - never

Net Zero/green energy - the biggest scam of the century (after the covid "vaccine")

Trans flag - people cannot change their birth sex

@burnside

I think from what I've read above and on the other thread that Reform best represent your views, so you should vote for Hilditch. That's potentially one less Conservative voter so it helps our cause.

You have options at the ballot box, so I don't see the problem. Nor do I see why you must constantly refer to the Liberal Democrats as the LIb Dumbs'. Are you intolerant of views that differ from your own and do you have an issue those views being expressed freely? Is the existence of political parties that do not represent your views problematic for you?

The Liberal Democrat party are pro-European, we see the UK as part of the European continent and we consider ourselves European.

Do you have an issue with Net Zero and green energy specifically or do you think that human induced climate change is a hoax?

I have written elsewhere that the Liberal Democrat  party is divided over trans rights and those who are gender-critical. And there is a problem with secular bigotry within the party.

Gender-critical is not the same as anti-trans or transphobic however.

This is from earlier this month.  https://www.christian.org.uk/news/lib-dem-ceo-reminds-party-to-respect-gender-critical-members/

Lib Dem CEO reminds party to respect gender-critical members

Party members must not be discriminated against for upholding the reality of biological sex because their views are deemed “offensive”, the Federal Chief Executive of the Liberal Democrats has warned.

In an email seen by The Daily Telegraph, Mike Dixon told local associations and party bodies that in light of recent legal judgments, “you need to treat members with protected gender-critical beliefs in the same way as any other member”.

Earlier this year, the Lib Dems were ordered to pay Natalie Bird £14,000, after she was banned from standing as a party parliamentary candidate over accusations of ‘transphobia’. The party also lifted restrictions on its internal gender-critical group, which had been banned from exhibiting at conferences for the last four years.

‘Sad indictment’

Dixon urged members to be “polite and constructive” when responding to sensitive issues, warning: “There is real danger of political parties continuing to be taken to court about these issues unless we get the response right. We would all prefer to spend money on campaigning and winning seats than defending legal cases.”

"An apology is due to David for the delay and for the apparent tolerance of secular bigotry.”

'God needs no defence’

In response, the Liberal Democrat Christian Forum (LDCF) stated: “It is a sad indictment of the democratic health of the Liberal Democrats that party HQ has to remind activists to be Liberal.”

LCDF highlighted the case of former BBC journalist David Campanale, who is suing the party after he was deselected as a parliamentary candidate for intending to vote according to his Christian convictions on non-whipped votes such as pro-life issues.

“Our hope now is that the party would end the run of expensive court cases by admitting it has got this one wrong. An apology is due to David for the delay and for the apparent tolerance of secular bigotry.”

‘God needs no defence’

In papers leaked last year, the Lib Dem party defended its decision to deselect Mr Campanale by stating that his “expressed religious beliefs against abortion, gay marriage and legal sex change conflicted with the fundamental values set out” in the party’s governing document.

The party also demanded that Mr Campanale legally prove that “Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life”, claiming that the statement submitted as part of his religious beliefs is “outside the defendant’s knowledge”.

But the award-winning ex-journalist told The Independent: “God needs no defence. He is after all the Judge. It’s whether the Liberal Democrats continue to be seen as out of touch in the dock of public opinion with the liberalism and tolerance of the British people.”

@AliPop

1. I refer to the LibDems as Dumbs because I consider them to be so.

2. Yes, so-called man-made climate change is a scam, one that is extracting ever more tax from people and potentially restricting liberties.

3. The British Isles have always been part of the European continent, even before we joined the EEC in 1973.  We do not need to be part of a European political bloc to be European.

1. Referring to the Liberal Democrats is as the 'Lib Dumbs' is chilldish. I really don't know why my posts upset you so much? What are you really so angry about? If Hilditch is elected to County Hall would you expect him to refer to the Liberal Democrat co-Councillors with such rudeness.

Do you believe freedom of speech allows you to write what you want and disrespect whoever you want. You don;t have to read and reply to my posts.

2. You believe man-made climate change is a scam, others do not. Were Reform to form a government would opposing views be accepted in parliament and society? Or would you like to see man-made climate change science and communication censored?

3. Obviously most of the Liberal Democrat party would like to re-join the EU, that differs from your view clearly. At least you accept that people in these isles are European unlike many on the right/far right. We made need to re-join a European economic block given the failure of Brexit, Trump's tariffs and a failing economy. We may also need closer political ties to Europe given the threat of Russia and the unpredictability of Putin's ally, some say puppet Trump.

Either way, you know a Liberal Democrat is not going to agree with you, so why bother commenting? Boredom?

4 I'm not questioning the reality of biological sex. I do not agree with Ed Davey and Keir Starmer who have gone on record as saying that women have penises. For me a 'trans woman' is just that a 'trans woman' and a 'trans man' is just that a 'trans man' and they are not a woman and a man respectively, irrespective of hormone replacement therapy or surgery. However I also accept that they do not feel like the sex of their biology and that biology is but one way of considering a person, others being emotionally, mentally, spiritually, etc all of which should be considered. The reality is that LGBTQ people have always existed across all societies.

Do you accept that trans people exist? i.e trans men and trans women. And that they have a place in society and human rights? Or do you believe them to be sick, perhaps mentally ill? Were Reform to govern this country what would be the plight of trans people? What about gay, lesbian and non binary people too? Would they be accepted? Would they be safe? What do you think? What would you like to happen to this minority?

Because we had the good sense to leave the EU Trump's tariffs are set at 10% for the UK, EU countries are paying 20%.  I would say that is a Brexit win not a failure.  There's a very good reason why I use the term Dumb for the LDs.

@burnside so you have no problem with the UK being under the thumb of and subservient to Trump's America, a foreign power, as long as it's not European? Isn't Trump of German descent? America is full of people of European descent, they almost chose German as their official language.

You can call the Lib Dems Dumb, because we have freedom of speech. Though you come across as a man-child.

If according to you Brexit isn't such a failure then that's nothing to do with Reform and the electorate may as well vote Tory or Labour.

I see you have chosen not to answer points 2 and 4. It's well known that were Reform to win a general election there would be censorship and oppression of minorities and people like @Steve believe Reform are champions of liberty and democracy. What a joke! Reform are most intolerant party in the UK, they won't guarantee liberties. Under Reform I imagine LGBTQ people would fear for their lives.

There'll likely be another EU referendum, the last one was 9 years ago and it will become a thing of the past, times change and the UK is no longer a global power, face reality. Brexiteers cannot keep dining out on the fact we narrowly voted to leave. Labour will take us back into Europe in all but name.

In any case a second unelected chamber with hereditary peers is hardly democratic. But Reform don't harp on about that. Why because it's nothing to do with Europe it's a British lack of democracy, so Reform turn a blind eye.

The first-past-the post system is far from democratic, and despite Reform having proportional representation as a policy, Reform don't harp on about this, because it doesn't represent an opportunity to blame foreigners. It's a British problem and the Little Englanders in Reform don't want to admit that our country is not actually that great and anywhere near as important as it once was when we had an Empire where we could exploit other nations as we pleased. Reform knows that being critical of British institutions won't attract voters, mainly Tories and some patriotic Labour voters. Reform what exactly?

Hilditch doesn't have any fight in him either, he's not willing to point out clear failures in local government relating to democracy and liberty because he probably just wants to be part of the network in County Hall and get that County Councillor allowance each month. He's no different from the rest of the politicians, he's probably chums with them all anyway down at the local lodge. He could easily win votes, but he chooses not to, same for Farage.

I for one would have much preferred Rachel Hardy instead of Rosie as candidate for the County Council elections. It's hard to argue that she isn't an embarrassment for the party with her secular bigotry, much like that simpering idiot Gary Taylor with his 'hands on' approach to debate in Council chambers. But the party is adept at weathering such storms.

The fact that this video (and no doubt the other videos online) comes as news to people on this site with only two weeks to go before the County Council election demonstrates once again how people in Dawlish simply do not know or care about who represents them in local government, let alone how well they conduct themselves in public office.

Rosie can rely on the reputation that she has within the town linked to her mental health charity, whether you think its deserved or not. People in Dawlish aren't bothered what the likes of Rosie, Gary and Martin get up to in Forde House over there in Newton Abbot, I doubt they even know what  or where Forde House is!

The video will make no difference, the turn-out will be low once again, with the majority of the electorate choosing to watch TV or go down the pub instead of voting, Reform will split the Conservative vote enabling Rosie to sit on all 3 Councils. There's nothing you can do about it. It's in the bag once again.

All political parties seek to portray a positive image of themselves, no party can live up to the hype let's face it. It's nothing to do with policies or values, it's all about winning control.

The Liberal Democrats 'Winning Here'.
