Anyone know why this is standing empty? What a waste. It could be used for all sorts of things planning permission allowing. Possible conversion to town centre apartments?

i heard it may be used as a drug rehabilitation centre, lord knows dawlish needs one

Ideal shop premises. It would still be a shop if people in Daw;ish had used it..but they never do, prefer glorify when a shop closes. You know if we didnt have holiday visitors there would be no point in trading here at all.

Do you know what? I was almost tempted to put something about Tesco in my original posting but then decided against it as I felt sure someone would oblige. And was I right or was I wrong?

So...having got the Tesco metro/let's make the lawn a car park 'jokes' out of the way can I return to my original question of - does anyone know why the building is empty?

i'm sure it has something to do with the rent and rates sadly the rent is £1750 a month and thats without rates electric or gas! i'd have loved to have rented the place but its such an expense and its a shame that its empty as its a beautiful building with a lot of prospect xx hopefuly someone will rent it soon happy new year to everyone

So, who is this landlord who charges so much in rent that no-one seemingly can afford to rent the place? If the rent was less then landlord might at least be getting something every month as opposed to the nothing s/he is getting at the moment.

Weird logic.

Landlords really do charge. I had a shop once .. now the internet is here .. never again. The only winner is the Landlord, as you say you may as well have some kind of payment but they like to tie into a set number of years and nobody wants to do that, such a risk. I remember my Landlord saying before I signed up 'I am happy to have you as you have your own home!' .. you know his thinking.

It's still owned by the Post Office and the rent is rediculous, and the lease is not a long one, hardly an appealling prospect for any potential tenant!

Maybe all the long term buildings and houses left empty should be used by squatters

Squatters?perhaps. At least that might galvanise the owners to do something about their empty propeties.

Why doesn't Teignbridge District Council do something about this like trying to get the empty properties occupied!

Okay -I'll tell you what - I'm going to start a new thread showing a list of empty properties in and around Dawlish. Perhaps someone who is an officer of/member of Teignbridge District council might just see it and do something.

Please add to list any other empties that you know about.

I see there is a 'TO LET' sign outside so anyone brave can go for it!

The Old Post Office would make a nice Wetherspoons or a yates wine bar!

Yes, there is need for a non-sport, pub/wine bar with a proper menu.

I have to say that despite my banging on about homelessness I do agree that the building does lend itself to some form of restuarant. (And yes I know we've got loads along the Strand and Brunswick but they really are very tired looking and a bit dowdy). Something along the lines of a Weatherspoons perhaps but preferably not a chain. Absolutely agree NON-SPORT.

Talking of restuarants - has the one in High Street closed? Can't think of its name (which says a lot........!) - seemed nice whenever I passed by but empty and totally out of the way in High Street and I don't think I ever saw any advertising for it.

Now...something of that ilk in Brunswick Place (with advertising etc etc) much more centrally located, much more likely to get custom. Plus tourists much more likely to come across it than anything situated in High Street. And handy car-park at Barton Hill.

Ideal really. So why no takers?

The restuarant in the high street does open but it's up for sale.

why not have the old post office as a craft center. There are lots of talented people in Dawlish (Brian Steffens etc)and surrounding areas it would fetch more people in, to spend money in the town

A craft center is a good idea there are lots of goverment grants for things like this.

So how can we progress this Craft Centre idea then?

I am not sure suppose it would mean getting in touch with the National Craft Guild and contacting all local crafts people it was just a thought. It would be great to have local crafts for sale as all the gift shops sell stuff made abroad. Given enough advertising I am sure it would attract a lot of people.
I know Powderham sell some local crafts but they take a hugh profit for themselves

Olive, you might want to get in contact with Dawlish Community Trust, c/o The Manor House. I understand they are undertaking research into how to revitalise the town centre. See if they can help.

Homeless Will do that although I am not a crafts person myself if just a few of us try to stop the rot and the town going even further downhill it will be worth it.look at the kiddies playpark site its nothing to do with what happened but how it can be put right

I thought Teignbridge District Council were going to do something about that. Also, I'll swear I saw something in local papers saying that Mayor of Dawlish (Rosalind Prowse) was trying to get something done.

On the Old Post Office - only the two ground floor rooms are to let, on a short term lease, at about £9,000 per year. You have to generate a lot of business to pay for that. The agents are acting for the new commercial owners which bought it from the GPO.
Dawlish Community Trust has considered the building but can't access funds for such a small slice of the property. It might be different when the Sorting Office moves (ask the Post Office when ?) and the whole site could provide a community + arts focus alongside the Shaftesbury.

Yeah, but if the post office moves out perhaps the new commercial owners will want even more rent then they are asking for now.

If no-one can afford to pay what they are asking for why are they asking it? What is their game?

And anyone know the name of these new commercial owners?
