Tesco to go to Teignmouth?

If some of the reasoning behind Dawlish needing a supermarket is to stop car journeys to Newton Abbot and Exeter then surely as long as there is a supermarket somewhere in the Dawlish/Teignmouth area it doesn't really matter where. So.......given that I understand Waitrose have pulled out of Broadmeadow (in Teignmouth) why don't Tesco go there? They'd be doing the community (the combined one of Dawlish and Teignmouth) a big favour if they did and they could spend all that money that they say they have for spending on the local community on cleaning up the polluted land at Broadmeadow.

Just a thought.....

Why let Teignmouth have Tesco. Are you mad? Just face the fact that it's going to get built whether you like it or not. See you at the chekouts - looking forward to it, best thing to happen to this town for years. Nuff said.

Your opening line of "Why let Teignmouth have Tesco" sums up beautifully this,as I and others see it, rivalry between the two towns. If there weren't any signs up telling of when entering/leaving Teignmouth/Dawlish no-one would know. Like it or not, from the the Dawlish sign just by Shutterton out as far as Bishopsteinton the whole area is as one. Whilst the whole area may be in need of a supermarket it does not necessarily need to be sited in Dawlish, does it? I am sure others will disagree with that so perhaps they can let me know why it HAS to be Dawlish and not just nearer to Dawlish?

Because people would then do their other shopping in Teignmouth - really great for Dawlish!!??? I don't think so!!!

Anon - you presuppose that when people go to a supermarket to shop they then go to the town to ....er......shop!

That ain't necessarily so. Hands up all those who shop at Tesco in Kingsteignton and then go into Newton Abbot?

I often go over to the Co-op in Teignmouth because they have a little more than the Dawlish store and then i pop into the town because it's so close.
Judging by the amount of Dawlish people i see i think many others do the same.

But the co-op in Teignmouth (both of 'em!) are actually in the town - not out of it. Out of town/edge of town stores do not necessarily bring people into town centres.

I suspect ASDA in N.Abbot easily does more to bring people into the town than Sainsburys or Tescos put together.
