Mindful takes an eternal pause. A silent tension engulfs them both.

MINDFUL
...I see people.

Alex just gazes quietly.

MINDFUL
I see dead people... Some of them
scare me.

Beat.

ALEX
In your dreams?

Mindful shakes his head, "No."

ALEX
When you're awake?

Mindful nods, "Yes."

ALEX
Dead people, like in graves and
coffins

MINDFUL
No, walking around Dawlish, like regular
people... They can't see each
other. Some of them don't know
they're dead.


ALEX
They don't know they're dead?

Beat.

MINDFUL
I see ghosts in Somerfield.

Alex becomes completely motionless. Works to hide his shock. He and Mindful stare at each other a long time.

MINDFUL
They tell me stories... Things
that happened to them... Things
that happened to people they know.
Things about dog muck.

Beat. Alex's words are extra-controlled. Revealing nothing.

ALEX
How often do you see them?

MINDFUL
All the time.
They're everywhere. But especially during the Carnival.
