An eight week consultation is under way on the site options being considered for new home building and for businesses creating local employment opportunities.

Since the current Local Plan was introduced in 2014, the area has benefitted from more than £200 million of infrastructure investments with a further £120 million announced relating to upcoming schemes. Successes include Dawlish Countryside Park, two new schools, extensions to various GP surgeries, lots more cycle paths and the A382 road corridor improvements at Newton Abbot.

So what is needed then is the right type of homes, the right number of homes, in the right place(s) and at a truly affordable cost.

Which is precisely what we won't get under the present home building system. 

Also, we need incentives for those who are underoccupying their homes to move to smaller properties. Howzabout a stamp duty holiday for those aged, say, 55plus who are looking to downsize. Plus an increase in the number of bungalows being built.  

!000 Local people currently living in Bristol and Birmingham who cant afford to buy and cant rent without housing and council tax benifits. How about building some high cost luxury homes for London business owners looking for a move from the city. You know the ones that bring more to the community than fartherless kids, like investment money employment oppertunities and much more.  Just a thought

@Cassandra - yes I know. But that doesn't mean there isn't any demand for them - which is the point I am trying to make about the housing that gets built not necessarily being the housing that is needed/wanted.

@FredBassett - not sure how local people can be defined as living in Bristol and Birmingham. Here's an extract from the newspaper article referred to in the first post on this thread:

"For those with homes it is easy to forget that more than 1,000 households in the district are in need of an affordable home to rent or buy and with house prices soaring to more than 10 times the average household salary, owning a home is currently beyond many people. The number of people on the affordable housing register doesn’t reflect the full extent of the need for homes.

Between 2011 and 2018, Teignbridge’s population rose by around 8,500 people and forecasts show that this growth is likely to continue.

I have lived in Dawlish for nearly 2 decades and in that time it has gone from a town to feel proud of to a town showing signs of neglect and increasing rises in crime.

A society with a police force who does little to curb the young from being anti social and committing low level criminal acts is in itself committing crimes against society. As they are then complicit in the criminal acts they have a duty to investigate once advised by the public, in my opinion.

As to this madness to build ten's of thousands of houses in Teignbridge. The only ones who prosper the most are the same old ones who have their snouts in the trough. Very little benefit is seen by the peseants who are parasitically fed off by those who have been 'democratically' elected to laughingly manage the running of Teignbridge again in my opinion.

Nothing will change. Newton Abbot and Teignmouth will get the largest share of handouts and the crumbs left over will be sprinkled far and wide with little benefit to the rest of us.

Luckily our local councillors will put a stop to that.........................
