Plans for a new, higher sea wall at Dawlish in Devon have been developed in partnership with engineering services firm Arup.
The design will prevent stormy conditions from damaging the railway at Dawlish, where the tracks and station are regularly damaged by flooding due to high waves and strong winds.
Cannot see the application on Teignbridge planning web site yet although the area in question is highlighted in red. From the illustration on the news article the extended height wall is only from the station towards boat cove not the section between red rock cafe (as it use to be known and the Dawlish station!
A breakwater would be better than just a bigger wall!

They should build the line the other side of town ..Dawlish Parkway avoid the sea ..it will always win!
The cost of building a new line at todays prices 8.1 million per km then take into consideration the terrain the cost would go through the roof. Then we would have a sea wall with little or no maintenance putting the town and cliffs at risk of flooding and erosion.
I've always thought the town has no interest in the railway just want it to protect the town..maybe Netwerk Rail should build a 12 ft wall all along the track or make it a tunnel all along the seafront....that would protect the town but no sea views.
As a Dawlish resident, who knows several other Dawlish residents who regularly use the railway, enjoying the beautiful journey and caring passionately about its future remaining in its present location as much as possible, I am rather confused (or perhaps bemused) by the above post, but definitely will not lose any sleep, or use up any further energy over it!!

Teignbridge Planning Committee approved the application this morning.
The Lib Dems led by Martin Wrigley tried to defer it but lost 6-10.
What's really strange, that when approval 'as set out' was moved after deferral was lost, the whole committee voted unanimously in favour (16-0) which included all the lib dems ?!

I wonder if there is a case for the residents to sue the council for loss of income if the wall's impact does affect tourism? I am sure many would chip in to take on Teignbridge if it does turn out to be an ugly disaster. Just a thought.
Do we want to protect the railway and Dawlish or not, sea levels are rising storms are getting worse i for one welcome it. Will it affect tourism i wouldn't think so for one moment but if the line was closed for months that might.

If the sea wall wasn't strengthened, it would be washed away followed shortly by Marine Parade.
Is there another way to protect Dawlish and the railway line. Is building the sea wall higher, the only way to afford protection? Councillors appear not to have a clue or are just clueless. How about something to help them, like errecting short sections of scaffold along the sea wall, (Marine Parade. and Sealawn Terrace) temporary of course but at the same height as the intended height of the recommended wall, covered by board. Then everyone can see what it will be like.
Line needs to be inland 'Dawlish Parkway' ..it is not rocket science the sea will always win.
So wondering what is your proposed route for Dawlish Parkway and the cost, taking into consideration high speed trains need gradient's of less than 4% and freight trains below 1.5%. My second question is when this new line is built who will maintain the sea wall that protects Dawlish TDC or DCC taking into consideration that it takes DCC three months to fill a pot hole and TDC tell us they are hard up for cash. The solution could possibly be that we could have a huge hike in our council tax ringfenced just for maintaining the wall. And does the sea always win the Dutch manage to keep it out and i believe Dutch engineers had some input into the planning.
